I posted this at SOVADSM, but for those here...
We are three weeks away. Here are the details of the caravan for newcomers:
The Front Royal caravan will begin at my house, 520 Carter St, Front Royal, VA (link). We will meet at 9:00 AM and leave at 10:00 AM. A note about parking at my house. I live at the end of a poorly-maintained dead-end street. The house is tucked away on the right. My driveway is short and will not accomodate more than 4 cars. About 100ft down the street, though, is a Super 8 hotel with a large parking lot. Park in that lot in the spots furthest from the hotel, ideally on the sides closest to my house or next to Carter St. Hopefully the hotel will not be jam packed that weekend and there will be space. If not, park along the curb on Carter St.
This is the route we are taking (link). Essentially we will travel up I-81, around Winchester, catch 522 up to I-70 and on up to the PA turnpike. From there it's the standard PA/OH turnpikes with which most of us are already familiar. There are high tolls on the way so have some cash handy. The PA turnpike toll will be ~$8.00. The OH turnpike toll will be ~$4.75. There are rest areas on both turnpikes with gas/food, but sometimes they are very far apart, so plan accordingly if whatever you're driving has bad gas mileage.
This is a no-brainer but bring walkie-talkies and spare batteries! Every car in the caravan should have at least one so no one will be in the dark as to what the group is doing (i.e. stopping for gas or if someone has to piss). Handy tip: get an earpiece/mic combo to plug into your walkie-talkie for hands-free use.
When I lead packs like this I generally do not try to break any records. I will be driving with or slightly above the speed of other traffic (70-75 mph). The turnpikes are very crowded during the summer and often have no shoulders along with jersey walls, so it gets tight. There is usually a lot of truck traffic as well. The turnpikes are also heavily patrolled so radar detectors come in handy.
So, to recap... Meeting place: my house in Front Royal (link) Meeting time: Friday, August 11, 9:00 AM Departure time: Friday, August 11, 10:00 AM Approximate tolls (one way): $12.75 Bring: walkie-talkies, batteries, tools
The hour between 9-10 is to allow stragglers to arrive and to shoot the shit for a while. I will gladly display some nifty carnage from my last motor and maybe have the wife whip up some brownies for us. We may swing by the nearby McDonald's or BK for some breakfast. My advice is NOT to shoot for arriving at my place at 10. Since DSMers are notoriously unreliable (like the cars), if you aren't there by 10 we WILL leave without you!
The return journey will be up to you guys separately. My party has made it a tradition to leave for home on Sunday afternoon, after the Shootout is over. This way the traffic is much lighter at night but we don't make it back to my area until 1 or 2 AM. Those of you who have to travel much deeper into VA may be better off staying in Norwalk on Sunday night.
A couple days before the 11th I will post my cell# and then remove it later. Call me if you get lost on the way to my house and if you're lucky I'll give you directions to the nearest ravine into which you can drive your DSM to help alleviate your misery.
Looking forward to it!
