#3026, "Can't get past 2000 RPM"

Just wondering if anyone might have a clue. I'm an old school
type i.e., quadrajets and small block chevys, but I decided
it's time to get with the times so I purchased a 1999 2gnt
eclipse that was heavily modified by it's previous owner.
When I purchased it it would not start at all unless the Cam
Position sensor was disconnected. Then it would not go past
2000 RPM. After I installed a new PCM it starts with the Cam
sensor connected but still won't go past 2000 RPM. I know it
is not the Cam Position Sensor or MAP sensor since I swapped
them out with the ones from my avenger and did not change
anything. I also swapped out the coils and still no change.
I don't think it's the O2 sensor as this should not have an
effect until it operates in the closed loop system. Although
it idles better when its cold. I'm thinking it might be the
crankshaft Position Sensor but I cannot swap it out with the
one from the dodge since it is different but......don't think
it would even start if it was bad. The car does have an APEXI
SAFC II and I checked the setup and it seems right. The car
is modified too much for anyone around here to have a clue.
Any Suggestions?????

Ed

First, please fix you font! I'm getting a head ache reading
it.

Second, go over a list of what has been done to it. This is
definetly something we need to know. Obviously it's turbo. A
lot of times this an be from the map sensor if your turbo so
check your wiring there. You said you have an safc? check
the wiring on it. you can get problems with it dying under
slow revving because the ecu is cutting fuel from positive
manifold pressure, hence the need for a fuel cut defenser for
turbo cars. Since you have the safc, it modifies the signal
from the map and the makes the ecu dump more fuel in.

Check the wiring
check your settings on you safc
run a search on the safc settings that others have used.

Here goes.

420A engine, no turbo but a cold fusion nitrous setup

JE 10.5 to 1 forged pistons (.20 over)
Eagle rods,
Crane #12 nitrous profile cams,
Crane Valve Springs,
Titanium Retainers
SS 1mm oversized valves
SRT-4 rocker arms/lifters
AEM adjustable can gears
ported intake
60mm throttle body
Accel 21lb injectors
Aluminum Pulley
MSD full ignition with coil, wires, dis-2 plus ignition system
AEM cold air intake
Race headers with full 2 1/2" straight thru exhaust
Mach V scrapper
OBX fuel rail
Oil catch can
APEXI SAFC II
AC and power steering removed.
fuel pressure set a 50 psi

I know I'm getting spark, Cam sensor, sensor, MAP sensor, coil, wires, plugs, and PCM all good. Both cam gears currently set at 0. Car starts up easily but idles like crap and won't go past 2000 RPM. It starts dying out. Vacuum running at about 13. Air/fuel mixture reading not consistant.

SAFC set at 4 cycl throttle up, pressure type sensor, and 06 in and 06 out. Any change to the settings will only make it worse.

Is the font better?

Check the cam timing. A member here had the same issue and found his cam dowel snapped.

Welcome aboard, youi find a few of us are old school muscle heads as well.

Whew!!!!!!!!!!!

After a month and a half I got it. It turned out to be both
my ECU and the MSD ignition box. Of course the two most
expensive pieces besides the engine itself. But on the bright
side I know a hell of a lot more about how the 420a engine
management system works.

I do have a question though, and I am pretty sure I know the
answer but I can always hope. Right now my engine is set up
really sweet and dynoed at 190 WHP without the 100 shot of
Nitrous. But to do this of course my compression is up to
10.5 to 1. There is nothing else I can do that I know of to
get any more out of it except going to a 200 shot with the
bottle. I am looking into a turbo system but I think I'm
doomed with my compression ratio. I have seen higher CR
engines like the Chevy LT1 with aftermarket superchargers and
turbo systems so...........is there any hope or is it not
worth the effort. I have a spare motor out of an Avenger I
could build up but I would hate to pull a perfectly good motor
especially with all I have wrapped up in it.

Thanks
