Originally posted by thugbot3oo5v4.0 i recently picked up a 97 eclipse rs with a blown motor for $300. the lady that i got it from NEVER put oil in it and one day it froze. Let's hope that's the only problem. How do you know the engine is siezed? Did it just stop working on her one day or will it physically not turn over (even by hand)? If the timing belt went on it, you're looking at a thrashed head as well, with a number of likely bent valves.
Originally posted by thugbot3oo5v4.0 i picked up a used block locally for $250. Just the block? Some useful terms for you: shortblock = bottom end/no head. longblock = complete engine, ready to drop in (for the most part). If you have a long block, just pull the dead motor out and replace it with the "new" one.
Originally posted by thugbot3oo5v4.0 i am also new to the dsm world and a long time honda crx owner and have never had to deal with obd2, hydro trannys, ac, power steering, etc. my question, is there anything important that i need to know about before i swap the motor? any tips you guys can recommend? do i really need to tow my car somewhere to get the ac discharged, or can i just let it vent into the atmosphere? It's not hard at all. There is no need to purge the AC system if you're wanting to swap motors. You will find, as you start unbolting things in that area, that the PS and AC ccompressors will conveniently flop out of the way. You can flip them out of the bay and lay them over the fender on a towel. No need to purge either.
If, for some odd reason you really *have* to purge the AC, leave the system alone until you get the car running, then drive it somewhere it can be properly removed and disposed of. It's been purged into the atmosphere, but that's illegal and not advised here.
Originally posted by thugbot3oo5v4.0 do you guys know of any good engine swap writeups for our cars? Hardest thing for you to get past in the DSM world is that there are no swaps like there are in Hondaland. The non turbo engine is a Dodge. The turbo engine is a Mitsubishi. You wouldn't try to bolt B18 heads to a Ford 5.0, would you? Suggesting anything between turbo and non-turbo is the same situation in the DSM world. Just a head's up. (There's even a thread in the turbo forum discussing this further, if you want to warm yourself by the fire.)
Otherwise, go az2gnt.net/FSM/.
Originally posted by thugbot3oo5v4.0 sorry for the non specific post, but i have tried the search function without satisfactory results(although i did find that good article on engine building from corbin). thanks. No worries. Attitude goes a long way too.
