#99719, "1995 Eclipse Dies on Interstate at 75MPH"

Ok here is the problem. I have a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS non-turbo 2.0 liter DOHC motor and lately the motor has been dying on me. Problem usually happens when I am driving down the interstate at 75MPH and all of a sudden the RPMs will drop down to 0 like the motor has been killed. Sometimes it will startup automatically as I am driving and sometime I have to come to a complete stop and restart the engine, I am not able to restart the engine while the car is in motion. Lately I have had to come to a complete stop and wait about 10-15min before the engine will restart. I have tried replacing the fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, & the crank shaft sensor not helping the problem at all. When the car dies the check engine light doesn’t come on so there is no way for me to pull a code from the computer. I have taken it to the local Mitsubishi dealer in town and they haven’t been able to diagnose the problem. This issue is very sporadic and only happens maybe once a month. Any help would be appreciated. Also when I am sitting at a stop light or a stop sign the RPMs will fluctuate a tinny bit. When I first purchased the car the lady that owned it before me blew the timing belt and the whole top half of the motor was replaced. Please Help. Thanks

Yeah sounds like an ECU problem. Maybe check the wiring for shorts. If the Check Engine light doesn't illuminate when the key is in the ON position, that usually means the ECU isn't powering up.

If you find none, try to find someone in the area with the same year eclipse to test their ECU in your car. Or find a salvage yard with the same ecu.

I went ahead a checked if the Check Engine light was turning on when the key is in the ON position and the light turns on for about 3 sec then shuts off, so I think the ECU is working fine. The Mitsubishi dealer said that I should replace the "Fuel Pump Relay" and the "Auto Shut Down Relay" (ASD) Should I have the dealership replace these relays or is there anything I can try nding the money. Thanksor check first before spe

first off buy the relays from them and replace it yourself save you some cash.

second do you lose ALL electrical power or just that to the engine?
if it does check for shorts.
if not do what ^^ said

When the car dies on the interstate or where ever, the only thing I loose is the motor, everything else electrical works correctly. Ex. Interior lights, head lights, radio, everything else work fine. The motor just shuts off. I don't know why the dealer thinks I should try replacing the fuel pump relay, the fuel pump seems to work fine, I can hear it when the key is in the "ON" position. I just noticed a small hole in the catalytic converter, that wouldn't have anything to do with this would it. Thanks

Well I guess I will try replacing the Fuel Pump Relay and the Auto Shut Down relay to see if that solves the problem. If not the next step with be relacing the ECU. If anyone else has any more suggestions feel free to post them here. Thanks Everyone for Reply so Fast. Thanks

I know 95s have this 50 MPH shutdown problem and they need to update the ecu to fix it. My eclipse has a software update sticker in the engine bay. Mines never had this problem.
