#99047, "fuel problem? i think"

hi guys, ive always got problems but now ive got a new one
ive changed my coil pack, spark plugs and spark plug wiring because my engine has been back firing recently. well i went and drove itthe other day and it died on me. wouldnt start. i let it sit for like 2 min then it started. and was trying to stall the whole way home. i had to break with my left foot and keep accelerating to keep it from buckin. so anyways. it stays running as long as i want if i keep it still, but the second i start to drive it it starts to buck madly. now ive never changed a fuel filter since ive owned the car and thats about 3 years now and its got about 165k miles on it. so my main question is is it the fuel filter probably? and if so where can the fuel filter be located? i think i read it was located near the trunk, but i dont remember fully. also if its somethin else like an o2 sensor could someone let me know? now ive been meaning to get new o2 sensors cause theyve been seemin bad and it never passes smog and my cats fine. well anyways if anybody has an idea please let me know.

If you havent changed the fuel filter in 3 years then I would start there. O2 sensors have a tendancy to be expensive so try to rule out some of the less expensive items first. Also, are you throwing any codes (CEL)? If you have a scanner, hook it up and see if the ECU has any codes stored. If no scanner then do the key-dance method to pull from the OBD.

EDIT: Just a little heads up: http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=search&select_forum= Bucking in search query brings LOTS of results

I'm not sure what your problem is but if you have a 95 or early model 96 then your fuel filter is on the firewall behind the windsheild washer reservoir. The rest are located back by the fuel tank, Pass. side wheel well I believe.

Yep 97 up is a real pain to change but then again I've only got 3 inches of clearance between the road and body so that contributes to my pains. Also, if you dont already have one, on the 97 up you will NEED a 19mm combo wrench for the foward banjo bolt. Have fun!

I've explained where the fuel filter is at least 3 times to 3 different people. Search, and you will find at least one of my explanations.

Also, it's not hard to change! In fact, it's one of the easier one's I've worked on. Make sure you jack the car up a bit though emoji

Can completely understand that one so, yea.

Mabey its just because I've only had this car for a year and it was the first time I have changed one on a sport compact. emoji I know on most domestic mid-size cars, small and full size pickups, and all the old school muscle cars, the fuel filters are easily acessible and have plenty of room around them to work. Oh, this vehicle has also been my first regular dealing with banjo blots so that also has an affect. emoji Ultimately you are right, not a great pain, was just a small one for me. emoji

ok, done with my rant emoji

..you definitely shouldn't be complaining that you have the late style fuel system. Next time I'm due, I'll let you do mine on the 95, and you let me know which is easier emoji

The first part (the "search" part) wasn't for you. It was for the OP. You obviously know where the filter is emoji

I'm use to small cars, 4 bangers and sport compacts, so the fuel filter wasn't a big deal. I've looked at some old engines, big muscle car motors and the like, and I've gotta say...It looks like EVERYTHING is easy in those cars! I mean, how long would a water pump take. Like 5 seconds! emoji Sometimes I wish I had one of those cars, just cuz everything seems a lot more accessible. Oh well, this is the car I chose......

LOL, I hear ya on that one! I actually miss building old v-8s, nothing like being able to crawl under the hood of a 68 camaro and sit on the fender while re-jetting the carb.

I hear you on that one.. That's why I kind of wish I had a RWD or 4x4 of some kind. The belt(s), timing belt or chain, all of the acessories are so easy to get to. Plus no electric fans.

In my eclipse it is on the firewall, in my cavy its right behind the rear axle.

It is right on top of the crossmember on the fire wall. If you take the Washer Fuild resivior out you will see it on the firewall. It kind of sits behind the resivior and under the intake manifold right by the rear motor mount.

No, do not jack it up. The crossmember is in the way under the car. Do you have any line wrenches? Don't try to use a regular wrench or you'll round the nut off.

If you want I can take a pic of it now.. my engine is about to come out.

Just checked it out and on the eclipse it has a 19mm standard bolt on the top and it has a 14mm flare nut on the bottom (use a line wrench for the flare nut). On my cavalier both sides used flare nuts. I also took a couple pics, I will post them in a sec.

okay guys, i replaced the fuel filter, mine was next to my gas tank by the trunk. we ripped out the windsheild washer resivoir and it was nowhere to be found so we followed the lines underneath and replaced it. car runs great now, but its still backfiring, so im going to go check the timing tomorrow after work, cause now its gettin late. but hopefully thats all thats left and it runs like it used to. i gunned it after we let it run for like 5-10 min and it didnt backfire at all, so i took it out again, (it was still running at this time) and then it started backfiring about 4800rpms and up so im thinkin it has to be the timing now. so again the second i get off work tomorrow im goin to check it.

What year did you say your car was?
If it is by the tank and your car is a 95, someone must have changed your fuel system to a 96+. It is only on the firewall on 95s.

i got a 96. i thought i said that, my bad guys. well yeah its a 96. it was easy to change only took about 5-10 minutes. so should i have the timing checked out? cause ive replace the coil pack, the spark plugs, the spark plug wires, and just had the header re-threaded cause it had 2 leaks because of taking off the aftermarket to put the stock one on for smog too many times. only other thing im thinkin is the o2 sensors, or knowin my luck i got a bent valve. falk.

It wouldn't hurt to double check the timing. If your 02 was bad, I would think it would be more linear, but I am not sure on that one because I never had one get that bad without throwing a cel. It could be the map sensor, if I remember correctly, Driggs told someone to change their map sensor and when they changed it it stopped backfiring in upper rpms. I read some threads and it says about a bad map can cause it to backfire. If you have a multimeter, I would check that out.
