#98708, "Weird noise made by P.S pump?"

Ok here is the deal, Lately i've been gettin this noise that is quite noticable when in the car, and also when under the hood close to P.S pump. It sounds simliar to the sound fuel pump makes when u turn the key on and when the pump activates, but this sound is constant. It only stops when i turn the wheels just a tiny bit to the right , or left. If i continue turning it doesnt make the noise. Seems like it's only noisy when the steering wheel is straight. I know what the role of P.S pump is, but i dont know how that could affect if it would make any sound. To my understanding seems like it makes the noise when there isn't any pressure on it. Maybe im wrong but thats how it seeems like.

Like i said it doesn,t do it if i move the steering wheel just a tiny bit either left or right. I can keep turning more and the noise wont be there. As soon as i put the steering wheel back in straight position, it makes the sound. When i was replacing my serpentine belt, i noticed some shaft play on the P.S pulley. Could that be the reason? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hmmm... never had that happen to me. Well you said that there was shaft play.. when you turn the wheels it puts tension on the belt im guessing and when you go straight the tension goes away so my guess would be a bad PS pump shaft. i dont know alot about them but maybe theres bearings or something that just need to be replaced. Knowing me I really never fix shit I just goto the junkyard and get a used one LoL! Good Luck with the problem. I hope someone helps you more than me.

low on fluid ? straight wheels = no pressure = not enough fluid pushed in = weird noise

just a guess

Bingo. Winnar.

Pull the cap and check the fluid level yet? Might want to give that a shot. If your PS system is making a groaning sound, like pretty much any Ford vehicle you've ever heard turning it's wheels, chances are you're low on fluid.

There are two hoses coming out the bottom of the resevoir that can leak, but if you pick up a bottle of PS fluid at Autozone with a leak stopper in it (read the label, most do, imo), you should be good. Top it off and check it again in a couple days.

OK sorry for late post, This is my last couple days in highschool and there is whole bunch of shit going on that i forgot everything about my car at the moment.

Anyways today i got back home from school and checked the fluid level. Its on max.

The noise is still there, now it has even some rumbling, and rumbling gets louder at higher rpms. I can still here the noise i heard before with some rumbling. My ps pulley does have some obvious shaft play so do i need a new ps pump? or could i replace the pulley? or what do i have to check for next?
Thanks in advance

You probabaly need the whole pump. I remember on my Avenger I had the alternator bearing was going out and I had to buy the whole alternator. If it has shaft play it is the bearing that you hear.
