#98207, "Good ol'OBD II code - P0443 - EVAP System Purge Control Valve Circuit Malfunction - HELP!"

Hey guys (girls)-

I have used the search function and found a couple of older threads regarding this emission code, but there was no clear answer on fixing the problem, just how to trace the emission vacs.

This code has been on for over a year on my weekend driver Eclipse GS - and now my license has been suspended due to the car not passing emissions. Mitsu thinks its the purge solenoid that is kicking the code - as they occasionally see this happen with the 2Gs.

This past weekend I tracked down what I thought was the solenoid and ran the tests on it that Chiltons recommends (Solenoid is way up in the passenger side bumper - a black roundish-bottom piece of equipment if I am correct). The test came out fine as far as resistance testing, but when it came to vacuum tests, I don't know if I was doing it right - pressure was dropping really slow.

Is there anyone on these forums that has succesfully fixed this code. I don't even know if the solenoid is the correct trouble area...and I don't want to waste $$$ to have a Mitsu dealer troubleshoot.

The car has very low miles and the only thing I have done to it is add an air intake - though I read on these boards that this won't kick any codes. I appreciate any detailed instructions on how I can resolve this issue...I would like to drive legally once again!

Thanks!

That code is such a pain in the neck. I've had it about 2 years myself. I've read just about every thread on this board about it and basically it seems like a such a crap shoot as to what could actually be causing it for your particular car. Could be anything from a leaky vacuum line to being a 97-99 with a turbo. I talked to an experienced Mitsu mechanic about it (a good friend) and he told me there should be a recall on that EVAP/purge system b/c they are always throwing codes. He told me it doesn't affect the car whatsoever and not to worry about it. However, I realize in states where you can't pass with a CEL that's not much of an answer. Read through the above hyperlink and try everything. Best of luck.

My next step is to replace the purge solenoid this weekend...I'll be pulling the solenoid out of the car and testing it on a bench...from what the Mitsu mechanic said...looks like this might be the source. The parts guy said its about $60 to replace. I'll keep you guys posted.

Good luck. I'm fortunate, my car doesn't see over 5000 miles a year, so even though it's currently throwing several codes it still passes b/c it's exempt.

I need to look into that here in Arizona. Don't think they have that exemption, but it's worth looking into, right? emoji

just a small update - I benched tested a new solenoid from Mitsu and it is not giving me the correct readings according to Chiltons. I have picked up a new solenoid assuming the first one I got was bad and will retest and let you people know if that solved the 0443 code.

ok I picked up another solenoid from Mitsu and bench tested it. The Chiltons manual (page 4-13) says that when battery voltage is applied, vacuum should be maintained. I had an expert mechanic take a look and he said that it should be opposite - when voltage is applied, vacuum should drop. Nevertheless, that is what is did - I applied 12 volts and the vacuum dropped and I heard the actuator click. I tested the 'bad' one that is in the car - and when I applied voltage, nothing happened and the actuator did not make any noises.

Therefore I concluded that I did have a faulty purge solenoid that was kicking the code - so I replaced it and the check engine light did go off when the car is in accessory mode *before it used to say on as soon as I turned the key*...

but...

the check engine light is still on when the car engine is running - I posted another thread about this issue and resetting the light but thats all I have so far on p0443. Please feel free to add suggestions and more to follow...
