I was looking at the timing adjuster for my mustang and had a few thoughts: How hard is it to do this for the 2gnt, and why hasn't anyone done it?
Since the sensor's in the side of the block and picks up notches on the crank, why doesn't someone machine a rotor that has the notches on it that directly match crank. You could mount it on the front of the crank pulley and use a bracket to hold the sensor near it.
You could trick the ECU in to thinking the crank is slightly advanced or retarded to adjust the timing.
I do understand that the ECU also looks at the cam position, but if you had adjustable gears, you could retard the cam to keep it in the window.
Any thoughts or ideas?

Because it wouldn't work that way. After 3* out on the crank, the CEL would come on, and a bit beyond that, the car would probably stall. If you could keep the cam magnet in sync you'd be effectively changing the base timing of the car. You may or may not run into problems with the injector timing walking further and further out as you adjust the base timing, but that might not be a huge problem.
I've seen pictures floating around of a setup like what you're describing mounted. Apparently it worked.
