Is the question stupid because you know the answer and asked anyway?
The cover is there to protect the timing belt from foreign matter that could interfere with the movement of the belt. If you're comfortable with it not being installed, then yank it. If you're worried about things, leave it on.
Personally, I think I have less than 40% of the cover installed altogether.

same here i have the whole top half from the tensioner pully up off mine, i left the bottom on so nothing would fly up into the crank gear and water pump
