I drove through a puddle in my 95 esi and i hydro locked the motor. When i got it home i found out i had broken the #1 con. rod. Now i am getting a salvaged motor from a freind but i dont know what i should do with it. I was thinking of putting in stronger rods and pistons(9.6:1 CR)for when i boost up the power. Will this cause any fuel or ignition problems? Same question with upgrading the valvetrain and porting the cylinder head? I have a budget of $4700cdn after the motor and before the machine work.If you could help me find something thats going to work in my pretty much stock car and be within my budget it would greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your hydrolocking....
If you keep the same compression ratio, then it won't change any fuel or spark characteristics any appreciable amount, so you'd be fine. Now for the valvetrain, if you're just upgrading to stronger stuff, again you'll be fine. However, if you're going to port the head, THEN you'll be changing some characteristics. The motor will be ingesting more air (hopefully) and since we are a speed density system (instead of a MAF), that will cause the car to run a little leaner. Enough to change the A/F so much that you'll have to compensate for it? I have no idea, but it's something you'll want to watch. One last thing, if you're thinking about going turbo in the future, and you're going with strong stuff, I'd suggest looking at a lower compression ratio. Now if you put that in your motor now (without a turbo) you'll notice a decrease in power, but you'll make that up with a turbo.
