ok, i spun a bearing on my crank so i decided to rebuild my engine. Got everything needed and even bought brand new std bore pistons and rods. They fit perfectly but my friend that is rebuilding my engine says that the std size rings are too small for the block, but not by that much.. does anyone know how much of a gap the rings should have with the block, and is anyone else having this problem that u might know what to do, whether to put the rings in or not because they are for my eclipse std bore like my pistons and the pistons fit?

did you do the rebore? or did a shop or your friend maybe? Whoever did the bore and hone job may notice alot of scoring in the cylinder walls and had to bore them out to .20 over and that would be the reason for the std pistons beign too small, ther is nothing you can do about it but either a. buy .20 over pistons, or b. find a low milage block out of a neon and hope that all you need to do is a hone job onit

i didn't do a rebore or anything, when we took apart the engine it was perfect no scoring or nothing and the cylinder walls are still nice a clean. Like i said the pistons fit perfect but all the rings are small

welp figured out the problem with the rings, just a matter of autozone kept selling me the wrong ones, they were for a 420a motor standard bore, but i forgot there is 2 different 420a motors, the one out of the neon and eclipses, and the one out of a sebring, and the sebring has larger pistons by a couple millimeters, so it was screwing up the whole thing.

Where did you hear that? They are all the same. If anything, the block in the Neon is different, as the Avenger/Sebring uses the exact same engine from top to bottom.
No doubt the AutoZone monkey just hooked you up with the wrong rings.

I still wouldn't put std. bore pistons BACK IN an motor with "How many miles on it?" The block should at LEAST have been honed or the rings will not seat properly.
EDIT: Like I'm serious. Use a micrometer please. Digital. Pistons only fit "Perfectly" when rounding to the nearest hundredth of a millimeter. And while your at it grab a microscope. Zoom in on those cyl. walls and check out how ugly they look
