#96465, "12 mpg and 14 vacuum?"

As the title says, i am only getting 12 or 13 mpg, which is rediculous, I just replaced the front O2 sensor, for the second time, but for some reason, i always have code 21, the manual says the sensor voltage to the computer isnt fluctuating? Whats that supposed to mean? Could it be the rear sensor, because i seen a thread saying that he replaced the rear one and it fixed his cel 21?

Also im going to get the fuel filter replaced tomorrow, im sure its the same one on the car for the last 10 years, well at least the last 3 that ive had that car, could that cause real bad gas mileage?

And i checked vacuum today, it read between 13-14 which is low, should be at like 17, and i just replaced all the vac lines with silicone hose, all except the brake booster, ill get to it someday, perhaps its leaking, because it sounds like i can hear a sucking sound coming from the intake manifold, i just cant tell where its coming from. I read that cams lower vac, but would it lower it that much over stock?

Any help is appreciated.

Your milage is probably directly related to the O2 prob. Usually the primary O2 will cause the poor fuel milage, b/c the secondary one is a feedback. If there is like zero cross count on the 2nd one, then that could also be a problem. The filter won't hurt and you said it's due. A big cam will cause low vac. I don't think that's your problem there. You probably just have an intake gasket leak or a vac line that is still leaking.

Well i find it hard to be a vacuum line since I just replaced them with silicon hoses, all except the brake booster, and if there are any coming from the Evap, I dunno.

But I dont think a bad fuel filter will cause low gas mileage would it? I guess ill try and replace the filter and rear o2 sensor, see if that helps any. But when i tested the vacuum it was when i started the car and it was cold, so it may have been even lower at normal operating temp, im not sure.

Anyone else have an insight to my problems?

The filter will cause poor performance more likely first. If you have a "soft" pedal or it feels spongy, then the booster vac line could be leaking alot of vac. Are you boosted? I had a low vac problem awhile back and it turned out to be the diaphram in my BOV had a tiny tear in it. I winded up using a cheap vac gauge to isolate it. Low compression can also cause low vac among other things.

no im not boosting, but i will get the filter replaced, and i will check timing and compression. i just had the thing fixed, slowboy redid my head, tore it apart and put it all back together, so i doubt the screwed anything over, and they said compression was 190 across the board when they were done.

i just hate how my car wants to stall at stop lights, or sometimes when i give it gas and let off real quick, more so when im moving slow or like in 1st gear, and im sure it has something to do with the filter, and maybe even the low vac as well...

Im pretty sure o2b1s1 signal to the pcm is the white with black stripe wire on the harness. It will be on the car half not on the sensors harness. You need to back probe the connector and watch the readings with a multimeter. You should see between 0 and one volt on a pretty constant move. .5 volts is round about the medium, neither rich or lean and you should see it swap back and forth above and below .5 ish. If you see a swap you need to locate that pin in the ecm connector and backprobe it to see if you still have the readings. It you do then you need to have a scan tool to watch what the o2 is sending the ecm and look at long and short term fuel trim. Chances are if you see it swapping on a meter all the way up to the ecm connector then you have a bad ecm. I've come across this a couple times on GM's. Also, 02b1s2 is for the converter. If it dont swap it dont matter, If it starts to swap and follow the 02b1s1 then it will throw a code for the converter. The ecm will ignore it other then comparing it to b1s1.

The error code regardng an O2 not fluctuating is mose likely the rear o2. if you scan the ECU with an actual scanner it will detail which o2 is throwing a code. the Rear o2 will affect your ignition timing slightly but not enough to throw your fuel mileage off.

Think about this logically. if the vacuum is low like when it is supposed to be 18-22, not 17, then how is the ECU going to react. The ECU will think the engine is getting more air and inject more fuel. This would lead to bad fuel mileage.

Now what could cause low vacuum. Vacuum line leak, i doubt this since you replaced all of them. Gasket leak since you just replaced the head; spray carb cleaner around all intake gaskets while the motor is running. Any change in RPM will indicate a leak. Another distict possability is your cam timing. if your cams have 1 tooth of overlap then you will deffinitly have a loss of vacuum. Aftermarket cams will also create this condition. Anyone who still wants to claim cams wont cause this need to find a new hobby.

So without knowing what exactly you have in your head that was replaced recently i would say check for leaks then chekc your cam timing. If you have aftermarket cams you will need adjustable cam gears to decrease the overlap to raise your vacuum.

i will check all of that when it warms up around here. i also have adjustable cam gears, but slowboy wouldnt use them because the marks were off, and i had to remark them myself, and they werent sure how close they were to stock, even tho i told them i put the stockers on, aligned them, took them right off and put the adjustables on, and the lines i made matched up, but no one listens to me anyways.

maybe ill just buy another set and put them on myself, but you say i have to overlap the gears to fix the vacuum, but how much would you say needs to be overlapped, or whatever? i remember the first time i did my timing before the tensioner came loose and bent my valves, the cams were slighty off, about half a tooth or less, and thats when the car ran perfectly, and i also remember reading about that on here somewhere, where with bigger cams, you need to offset the cam marks to adjust to the proper ignition timing and vacuum as well, so maybe i need to mess with the timing and increase or retard the cams a tiny bit to fix all that.

there is something I have seen twice so far and it's a bad cam sensor when one of our cars has really bad MPG

when you start your engine the ECU is looking for the crank and the cam sensors to establish the injection and fire sequence
first the ECU is shooting all 4 injectors at the same time until both sensors are synchronized, once the ECU has a solid reference from the sensors the injectors are shooting in sequence one at the time OR if something is wrong the engine shot down

however on some model years the engine can run forever the engine won't shot down it will keep running with the 4 injectors shooting at the same time at the lowest duty cycle that the ECU can idle the car will run extremely rich and MPG will be horrible
I know that 95 can't run but some 96 and up could

to check if your car could be one of those just disconnect your cam sensor and try to start your car

Woah hold on. First off do you have aftermarket cams? USe your existing adj cam gears and mark them accordingly as you stated. Has your head been milled?

For the record the correct and proper way to get your cams just right is to Degree them with a degree wheel. Since you have the motor in the car and have no idea what i am talking about then we will go about this another way.

A decrease in Vacuum is most often caused by too much overlap of the cams. Some overlap is required for scavanging. Look that up on the internet and learn a little. its good info to read.

If you think to the antique cars you will think about how the modified motors lope very agressively, this is due to a very high valve lift, duration and overlap. As duration increases in your valve lift the overlap will also increase. This is why most antique cars with aftermarket cams have very low vacuum. To give you an example, my superbee has around 7in/hg of vacuum idling and the cam i have is the second to largest lift/duration that can be used without smashing valves.

So what do you do? Start with checking your timing and get it to "0", if the head has been milled the cams will most likely be off. Basically you want to get the centerline of the cams matched up at TDC of piston 1. If you have aftermarket cams they prolly will not have the dowel holes in them like the factory cams do.

<b> If you still have factory cams </B> then remove the VC and rotate the motor till you see the dowel holes in the cams. Both dowel holes need to be facing up and perpendicular to the head while the piston #1 is a tdc. Bring the piston to TDC and adjust the cam gears till the dowel holes are where they are supposed to be.

<b> If you have aftermarket </b> the only way to accurately is t degree them. So for now what we will do is remove the bolts that hold the cam gears on and use the dowel pins as reference points. As you know one dowel pin is down while the other is up. With the piston #1 is at TDC check the location o the dowel pins. Make sure one is at 6 o'clock and the other is at 12 o'clock. If they are not the adjust the cam gears accordingly. Re-intall your cam bolts and tighen accordingly.

Now lets verify your work. Take a ratchet and socket and rotate the crank by hand with the spark plugs removed. For the first 2 full rotations, do this slowly. you are looking to make sure you didnt make an error and the valves with hit the pistons again. After 2 full turns go ahead and rotate the crank a little faster by hand. you should not hear anything fromthe cylinders other than air and there should not be any resistance other than the valves springs.

Put your motor back together and start it up. If you have aftermarket cams and your vacuum is still low and you have a poor idle. Then try retarding the intake cam 1 or 2 degrees and advance the exhaust 1 or 2 degrees. Try this 1 degree at a time. this will reduce the overlap of the cams. If 2 degrees does not make things even a tiny bit better then report back here. If it makes it worse reverse your adjustments and report back here.

Keep in mind if you have aftermarket cams you will not have a perfect like stock idle.

Also if you have aftermarket please post what cams you have already so others who have these same cams can chime in.

For the record a collapsed vacuum line will not react like a vacuum leak and if you have access to a scanner or know someone who does check the operation of the Crank/Cam sensor as stated. I tend to overlook the synchronization myself since i have hardley ever seen it. That is a strong possability and if you have a 95 the ECU may ignore it and default to simultaneous injection as stated. Good info from Alain.

Pretty sure he's running Crower 2s, Terry. Also pretty sure he's got an SAFC installed and "tuned."

My advice? And this is just because it's probably the easiest thing to do and could give you some peace of mind - disconnect that damned SAFC. Unplug it, pull the fuse, douse it with flat beer. Whatever. It is a tuning device which, get this, modifies signals to your ECU in the interest of adjusting the fuel trims.

If you take the SAFC out of the picture and you still get shitty mileage, then you should trouble shoot down to what's wrong with the engine. I've always felt you should make sure everything is in top working condtion before you go trying to tune it.

I've practically got the same head as you, right down to the cams and where it was built. I have no fuel system mods whatsoever. Aside from the fuel filter, my entire fuel system, right down to the injectors, came with the car when I bought it in 96. I also have stock cam gears. The engine runs just fine and I can easily make 400 miles on a tank in town.

The low vacuum is a result of the cams. There's no way around that. My car will tend to bog or die when I first start it up cold to, but once she's warmed up, she very rarely floods out in traffic.

I get stock or better MPG from the stock fuel system and cam gears. I would suggest just trying things out without the SAFC.

Do you have a wideband? Are you still running stock injectors?

My .02

EDIT: tag.

i have always had low vacuum and bad gas mileage period. my car had either 15 or 16 vacuum before anything was done to my head, and i always had bad mileage as well, but i dont think its been this bad.
i know my cam sensor has a split on it where one of the bolts is from tightening it down to much, so maybe i should get another one of those.

the head has been milled, and the cams i have do have the holes on top to let you know where tdc would be, that is how i fixed the adj. cam gears, but put the stock ones on, without the bolts. put a 3/16 socket in the hole, and adjusted the stock cam gears til it was right, pulled them right off so the marks didnt move, and put the adj ones on, and the marks lined up, but when slowboy redid everything, they didnt use them because they said they werent sure if they were right, and they dont use them on their cars and blah blah blah, but yet they sell them, makes perfect sense. so i have stock cam gears with crower 2's with the head milled, and since you said i would have to +/- the cams to get the right setting since its milled, and they put the car at stock setting, im sure its not exactly where it should be.

the car is a 96, built in oct 95. if i had a garage, i would check timing and all that, but theres snow outside, and its like 18* out here, and it dont plan on getting much warmer than that for quite some time, so i dont think i will check it. i also have a blinky a/f gauge, so its not accurate but when slowboy tuned it, they use a wideband to tune, so that should be good, although the blinky still goes crazy.

say driggs, by any chance, do you know what your vac reads, just curious since we have almost the same head.

Wish I could help, but I've never so much as had a vac gauge near my car. Maybe I'm just lucky, eh? emoji

so i go to remove the afc like you said, and try to start it, and it wont start, so i reset the battery, and it still wont start, it will sorta, but it will just bog at like 100 rpms, and just die, so i try a few more times, and finally get it to run, so i let it idle for a few minutes, and go to drive it to let the computer learn, and oddly it seemed a little quicker, until i hit 4k, and it wont go past it, it forces the rpms back and just stutters everytime it hits 4k. i have the cel 14 for the map sensor, so maybe its bad, or maybe they cut the wire? i only disconnected it from the harness, not the whole computer, i dont even know where to begin on that. any ideas?

I was thinking about this yesterday on my way to work (yes, some of us actually think about others' problems while we're away from the board and even jump on just to check into things like this), and I figured there might even be a way to disconnect the SAFC without cutting power to the unit so it would still have the SBR settings in it. This way, you wouldn't lose them, but it's probably too late for that now, eh? Hope you at least tried to write them down for later just in case.

Sounds like fuel cut to me. (Anyone else concur?)

I think they have to run the MAP signal through the SAFC in order for it to work, but I don't have direct experience in this regard. Terry? In the meantime, you might pull the MAP and check it out. Make sure it's not clogged with any grime or shit. I think you can clean it with Brake-Kleen, but search on MAP cleaning before you actually do that to be sure.

That's a bit more than I can go into. I've never installed one. do you still have the packaging for the SAFC? Even so, you might search SAFC + install here to see if anyone posted up in the past asking which wire to connect where. Maybe that will give you some insight on whether this is really the issue.

I'm sure Terry can help out a bit more with this one. Don't feel bad. I happen to know that even Ludachris, the founder of DSMTuners asked for help recently with just how to disconnect the SAFC. emoji If I get a chance, I'll check out that thread (it's in a private forum over there you can't see) and see if I can get any better help on the subject if Terry doesn't beat me to things.

EDIT:
Maybe www.vfaq.com/mods/gvr4_afc_instructions.html will help you out a little bit. It's for a 4G63T, but the SAFC will need many of the same inputs on a 420A. Maybe reading through this will give you some idea what it's tapped into at this point.

Good luck.

well i thought the afc has a memory chip in it, so i wont lose the settings, i will just have to change them? because its just like disconnecting the battery, isnt it, its still losing power, and i know it wont lose the settings that way, i think?

and if this thing is the root of all my problems, ill just sell it, i like it tho, shoing my pressure and rev and throttle opening and all that good stuff, but sometimes you just have to let go -lol-

i guess ill go out and look at the sensor, hopefully i dont need a new one, they are like $70 at auto zone, altho i got a $25 gift card, so it wont be to bad.

but why would i have fuel cut now, after i take the afc off, and why not when it was on?

If all you did was disconnect the SAFC then your ECU doesnt have the map connected at all. The map sensor wire must be re-spliced back together.

The SAFC will not lose its settings.

thanks terry, thats what i thought. do you know what color/where its cut/where it needs to be connected/anything else i need to know?

would that cause fuel cut? when i started the car just now, it almost dies right away, unless i rev it for a few seconds, then its fine, idles great, maybe even better than when the afc was connected, except a little rough everynow and then from the cams, and if i hold the gas steady, it sounds like its missing bad, and like i said, wont go over 4k, does the MAP sound like the culprit?

It's more than likely done under the dash somewhere. If Terry doesn't hit this thread back up before too long with the easy answer, see if you can't find a schematic with the search. I think I remember someone having a post locked in the advanced forum awhile back about how to install the SAFC. If you can find that, you'll likely find where it was moved and maybe someone linked to another old thread in that thread.

so all i have to do is find the yellow and white wire and reconnect them? and is driggs right by saying they will probably be found under the dash, or would the cut wire be found under the hood?

no he is wrong. there are no wires for the map, 02, or any sensor related to the engine's performance under the dash... they should all be connected directly at the ECU at least within inches. if you follow the SAFC harness back from the entry point on the firewall and trace it, it should lead you right to the ECU where all those connections are to be found. if you just unhooked the safc from the harness then the map signal wire is no longer being sent to the ECU, altered or not. NO MAP signal = crazy ass engine performance and the ECU probably falls back on some "limp mode" pre-determined fuel/ignition table... you need to have a map signal for the engine to know what the heck is going on. if the shop had any competency when they hooked up your SAFC then they should have a male/ female butt connectors on the MAP signal wire which will allow you to bypass it by just plugging them back together without the SAFC. check the main page/mods tech/ fuel system building for more writeups and ECU harness colors & pinouts.

PS- you can leave the SAFC hooked up with all the other wires & only bypass the map signal wire if you like how it looks and like to see the TPS, voltage, RPM etc...

EDIT: wow... too much typing. had to fix a few things. fingers hurt. going to go drink... more...

ok i took off the wires that were connected, used blue 16 gauge wire to reconnect the map sensor wires, its yellow with a black strip incase anyone is wondering, and it starts and idles good, except my a/f gauge is showin rich almost all the time, and i can smell it too.

and the stalling is worse now, it almost always stalls when i stop, or start to go and let off the gas quick, it damn near died when i went to auto zone to have the code erased, it was at probably 100 rpms, just barely living, at it was there for a good couple of seconds til i gave it some gas to go (waiting for guy to turn)and even after the code was erased, it was still doing it, perhaps it is mu fuel filter, im having it replaced tomorrow at my job, hopefully, as long as nothing goes wrong, which it always does, so how knows...

it also seems slower, especially in first, until the cams start to pull it, then it picks up a little bit, but not much, this car sucks, anyone wanna buy it?

Sounds fairly familiar. I get that from time to time when the car is first started after sitting for a few hours or more.

There is a trick that might help you in the mean time.

If you look at that "arm" on the TB where the throttle plate slaps shut on the outside of the TB, you will see there is a little set screw there that the plate rests against. On the opposite side of that arm is a little tin cap that can be opened up - drill, awl, whatever - to give you access to the set screw. Then you can crank it out a little bit to mechanically raise your idle. This should help for a while. In fact, this is how I have my idle dialed in for almost a year now.

Once you figure out what's causing your other problems, you can fix them and set this back if you like. Totally, easily reversible.

Good luck.

ive already done that, i have it to the point where if i open it anymore, the idle goes crazy, jumps up to like 2-3k and starts surging, but sbr might have lowered it because i told them i had the idle turned up, so maybe i will try that, but even so, if it is dropping to like 100 rpms, turning the idle up a tiny bit wont help that much will it? and ive had this problem for quite some time, i dont think ill ever solve it...

the car idles at like 800-850 i believe, sometimes lower, just depends on the mood its in, i wanted to try turning it up with the afc, but dont know how, but i was looking thru the settings and they had the low throttle at 10% and high at 50%, i thought it was good to have it at 30 and 80? i dont understand any of that tho

It could. I'm kind of thinking it could be related to ECU fuel trims being messed up a bit. Remember, the ECU is reset when you disconnect the battery and will have to rebuild the LTFT. emoji

Heh. I'm not that far ahead of you in this regard. I'm pretty sure you can't adjust idle speed with the SAFC due to the ECU controlling the IAC to find preset 750rpm. It only displays it for convenience as far as I know.

The Lo 10% and Hi 50% refers to throttle if I'm not mistaken. When the SAFC sees TPS pass 10%, it uses the Lo trim settings. Should you pass 50% throttle, it would use the Hi trim settings.

I could be completely wrong, here, but I would think that, if you're using the SAFC to lean out your idle, you would want to set your Lo at something like 0% so that it's using the leaner, low low fuel trim at idle, and then set your regular driving trims at something like 5-10% under the Hi setting. emoji

I've never actually tuned one of these things before, but if you installed it to lean out your idle, but don't run the Lo trim until 10%, the SAFC isn't going to be doing anything at idle unless your TPS reads 10% or more at idle.

Terry? deej? emoji

If he has bypassed the MAP signal on the SAFC by re-hooking it back up to stock config ie- map wire directly to ECU then the SAFC is doing nothing NOTHING for tuning. You can change any settings you want on it and it wont do anything. It is now merely a display tool. The only thing the SAFC has the ability to change on our car is to alter the MAP signal and all those settings are in reference to when and how and how much it alters the signal.
that is all.

Not to sound like an ass but...
Sounds like this car and its tuning have gone beyond your ability. You might need to back off playing with it until you understand some more of the fundamentals of tuning and building. If you don't know what SBR did (and it doesnt sound like they have a clue about the 420a) then you might need to step back and find someone who has more tuning ability in your area that can help you get all these basics worked out.

I know that. I was just saying something that came to mind after-the-fact. How could the SAFC adjust idle when it's not set to do anything until after 10% throttle? To me, that sounds like they set it up to do everything but fix idle.

My philosophy is to get the car running right before trying to tune it. Kind of why I've had my MSnS sensors installed since last April and not gone much further than that; I still have problems to solve. Fortunately for me, none of them affect drivability, they just result in a bit of smoke from time to time... emoji

well im not really worried about tuning it now, and if i did want to tune it, i dont think i will use the SAFC, ill buy something else, any ideas on whats good for our cars?

as of now, all i want to do is figure out why the vac is so low, and why it wants to stall, and on a side note, it seems im getting better mpg, and im replacing the rear o2 sensor, so that might help some too

Don't use the SAFC to tune.

Do you ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND WHY?? If so say yes. If not don't just sit there and type that you do know but really don't and then nothing is really getting accomplished when you walk away from the computer and still don't know what it's purpose is/how it works someone will explain it, it's really easy.So you do understand when you walk away and tell them guys at SBR they suck. emoji

/breathe emoji

I'm not even being mean. (I think I've typed this already tonight....I must be mean) But really there are avenues you JUST cant go down right now until you read for like a year emoji. Like a standalone. The goddamn friken easiest thing you could do is buy a wideband, sfmu and some 440's and tune your fuel with the sfmu and the car will run good. Clean that map sensor if haven't already and get a new o2 and get that thing running emoji

Point of this post.

Don't let friends, use the SAFC.

i said i dont think i will use the SAFC, not i will use it, i already know it dont do shit for our cars, thats why i asked what would be better to use to tune our cars with.

i have a new front o2, and the rear one is coming in today, map looks good, i checked it out, car runs fine, other than it wanting to stall sometimes, but its always done that, dont know why emoji

You have semi-aggressive cams installed. At idle, they generate less vacuum than the stockers (problem #1 explained. There is no getting away from this). This reduction in vacuum results in the ECU increasing fuel delivery, as the 420A runs a MAP sensor which calculates fuel trims based on the pressure (or lack thereof) in the intake manifold. Simply put, the ECU thinks the engine is flowing more air, so it gives it more fuel. The stalling is caused by flooding.

Were the 2GNTs using a MAF set up, the ECU could determine how much air is actually being ingested and add fuel to accomodate, but our ECU has to guess based on vacuum readings. Remember, if the MAP sees any positive pressure (boost), it will cut fuel. (Why the turbo guys have to install the missing link or FCD.) So a big part of how the ECU determines how much fuel to shoot into the cylinder is based on vacuum. You're running lumpy cams, so the computer is going to be running excessively rich until the revs increase a bit.

Another sensor often missed when dealing with poor idle is the coolant temp sensor (CLT). The ECU is also considering how hot or cold the engine is at any given time so it knows when to richen the mix. If you don't remember the last time you changed out the CLT, or it's all shitted up, now would be a good time to throw $20 at a new one. (EDIT: This is why the problem is generally worse when you first start the car. The ECU is trying to warm up the engine.)

YEA The CLT could be fuckered and thinking the motor isn't at operating temp (even though it is) and dumps fuel crying to warm the motor up.
Thats the sensor with a single wire right at the thermostat housing. Just for the record emoji

Heh. It's funny how much that sensor actually matters emoji We should have mentioned that a while ago emoji Sorry we need lessons I guess emoji

EDIT: Thank god I'm a 95' and don't have to deal with the MAP shit.

Actually its NOT... The one with the single wire is the temp GAUGE sender. that feeds the signal to the Gauge cluster...
The actual CLT is the larger of the 2 and has a 2 pin harness on it.

EDIT:

I'll male this even easier... maybe bliz can understand pics...

Coolant Temp Sensor -> ECU

Coolant Temperature Gauge Sending Unit -> Gauge cluster in dash

yes i have stock injectors, i have already replaced the ECT, and the stalling problem has, for as long as i can remember, always been there, it just got worse with the cams i suppose.

so today after picking up the rear o2 sensor, i got out, and try adjusting idle with that screw on the tb, and get it up to 950+, and shut the car off, and it just happens to stop at about TDC, now im not sure if it is or not, but it if is, the marks aint lined up, and also, get this, the belt is real loose, i can push down on it, and even pull it towards me, since it was off track about 1/4 an inch anyways, so im gonna do a compression test now, my guess is timing is still off yet again, maybe my tensioner is bad?

...ok weird, belts not really lose anymore after all that. checked compression 195 190 200 205, so compression is good. plugs were a tanish brown color, and having the idle turned up as high as i had it wasnt good, i would have the slow idle where it stayed up there for a while, or if you slighty tap the gas, it goes way higher than it should have, and after driving it, i had mad idle surge, so i turned it down a bit, but its funny how when i turned it up, it was at 950, but the next time i started the car it was back down to 850 like it usually is.

would a logger be useful? i dont really know much about them, but from what i think i know, they tell me exactly whats goin on in my car, but im not sure if non turbo's can use them or not? or is it something else im thinkin of?
