#9553, "Polling regarding dead motors.. please respond."

Before i get to the main point of why i'm asking i'd like people to respond to the following question:

Have you spun a bearing and or done any other crank damage (mains/oil pump) and were running and underdrive pulley. If so.. what mods (approx HP) and what pulley. If you did this and were using a stock pulley that'd be helpful too.

If you could answer it'd would be very appreciated. There seems to be a lot of people spinning bearings i'm just trying to unearth exactally why it's happening and if it may be preventable.

Thanks,

WheatKing

The reason for all the spun bearings is low oil levels. The 420A has a rep for not being able to hold oil wether it be a head gasket leak or burning oil. Low oil level means bye bye bearing. I spun a bearing due to the head gasket leak which means low oil, then spun bearing, and then finially blown engine. I still have a stock pulley.

Not me, but i've always been of the school of thought that low oil levels and low oil pressure (basically, lack of lubrication) are the culprits of our spun 420A bearings.

I spun a bearing 3 times. I always have my oil changed every 3000 miles which is about once a month to once every 2 monhs. I was about 2,000 miles on to an oil change and the engine started making a funny knocking noise. I drove to a gas station and checked the oil, none on the dip stick. It took 2 qts to get it right. I took it to my mechanic and he checked it out and found the spun bearing. He told me the crank was only .002 - .003 out of spec and should be fine but it could spin the bearing again. I told him to replace the 1 bearing and let me have it back. Cost $300 and the only part replaced was the bearing. About 1500 miles later after 1000 of break in my girl was driving the car and took off in to trffic and reved it up to 7,000 and it knocked once or twice and then the rod went threw the block. emoji

I found out what the powertrain warranty was and found out it was 3yr 30,000 for the eagle but 5yr 60,000 for the eclipse. I was at 55,000. I took it in and they told me it would be covered if I could give them the oil change receipts. I didn't keep that crap! I called my mechanic and "he happened to have the copys of them for me" emoji Satan jerked around for 4 weeks before we finally got them to work on it. Fuckers. I got a new shortblock straight from Mitsu Corp and a new head and we paid for a timing belt change but no labor charge. Then they fucked up and left out the cam bolts and had to get new valves overnighted the day before NOPI 2000. So they give me the car back at 4pm Fri with a 1 year 12,000 mile warranty and I broke it in by driving it to Daytona for the SS tour stop and then to Atl the next day and then back home after all of that. Now I will admit that I did get on it a little at NOPI with about 750 miles on it. :o

So about 8,000 miles on this shortblock and it starts knocking again. I take it to Satan again and they replace the bearings and the crank. Then they found an oil leak at the cam position sensor. They told me that I was losing oil and that was why the bearing spun. They got that leak to stop but I was still losing oil. About 1 qt per 1000 miles. I took it back in to them a few times and the last time I was there they handed me a TSB stating Mistu Corp believes that oil consumption of 1 qt in 1000 miles or less if NORMAL and not covered under warranty! Basically telling me to fuck off since I have already cost them $10,000 or so. I still have to add oil all them time but I am just used to it and deal with it.

So there you go, hope this helps some. My mods during this whole shitstorm were exhaust, K&N drop in filter, and suspension. I never had an underdrive pulley, just the stock one.

Well the only way to spin a bering is to have low oil level. I don't know why anyone wouldn't keep tabs on their motor anyway to prevent this! I personally pop the hood at least ONCE A WEEK and check all fluids, and look for leaks anywhere. Its called preventative maintenence!! As most of us know, our motors use a little oil normally. Just check it every week or so, and keep the level up, its as simple as that. I usually don't have to fill it any, but after about a 5 hour trip to my home and back, it went down about a half a quart of oil. I hope everyone here keeps good tabs on their car, and if not, thats when bad things start to happen!! If you neglect your ride, it will bite you in your ass! If you beat the crap out of your ride, it will bite you in your ass!! I personally don't beat the hell outa my ride, i do race every so often, but not much. I take care of it, and so far, it has taken care of me. Now granted, some people have had major problems with their cars by no fault of their own. Its a car,a machine, it will happen. But as a general rule, if you take care of it, it will take care of you! Since i have been on this forum, i have seen so many posts like "i hate my car! Its a POS!!", when all the problems were usually caused by neglect or abuse. If i abuse my ride, i am ready for the breaking parts, the BS, and the expense that comes along with it. Think about fellas, take care of your ride!!! And please dont complain that the Eclipse/ Talon is a POS, cause it really isn't, maybe just a little finicky sometimes, and this is a car that NEEDS CONSTANT MAINTENENCE!!! If you don't like to repair and maintain cars, you own the wrong car!! Get a honda!! emoji I love my Eclipse!!! I'm really not trying to be an ass or anything, but people are getting the wrong impression about our cars, and that they are plagued with problems. Just maintain your car, and you will have a better chance of not getting "infected" with car problems! This is my opinion anyway for whats it worth emoji
