#95221, "2 important questions. need to get my talon running BAD"

1. how do i take my crank pulley off? it wont come off at all, i tried a lot of things, but no luck.

2. i found a neon DOHC engine for $150. it needs the headgasket changed so its a good deal. are the engine mounts in the same location? could i use the same ECU? what would need to be changed in order to have the neon engine to run in my talon?

It's not the best just because I drive it, I drive it because it's the best.

You need to buy a puller for it. If you were using one and it wouldnt come off, I bet you had one of the bolts too tight and there pulley was pulling off crooked.

The stock pulley requires a jaw type puller, you can rent one from Autozone ect.

As far as the motor, you need to use your 2gnt head with the neon Bottom. you might have to change oil pans, not sure on that though. The same mounts work, you may have to change the bracket for the passenger side one and reuse your 2gnt one. You will need to use your 2gnt ecu, the neon one wont work. Basically all you can use is the bottom end, accys need to be swapped over and the head obviously.

so i cant use the neon head? i mean i thought they were basically the same engine. i have the talon head, just my 420a block has rod knock, and i found me a DOHC neon engine for $150. it was pulled from a wrecked neon sport, and some water was found in the oil, my guess would be the head gasket, and everyone that i asked about it said the same. i mean id rather use the neon head if i could, but i dount know if all the sensors would be compatible with the 420a harness.

It's not the best just because I drive it, I drive it because it's the best.

you cant use a neon head because they flow 180* diff than ours. take a look at a DOHC neon engine bay. the exhaust mani is back on the firewall and the intake mani is up there right in front.

p.s. a simple search could have yeilded an answer to both your questions in less than 5 minnutes

yea, i would have searched but i was too damn tired at the time. sorry for wasting your time. so the neon engine mounts are going to be in the EXACT same place right?

Everything off of your old engine except the lower end needs to be used. Oil pan, Motor mounts, all the accessories, Head, sensors, I believe even the Oil pump has to be swapped over. and you have to replace the timing belt when you swap the head over.

Get a 3 jawed puller...
remove the crank bolt and use that bolt by threading it in a couple turns
tighten puller with an impact
then switch to the long bolt that goes into your motor mount to finish puling it off...
to reinstall
I sprayed the pulley and shaft with pb blaster (didnt have wd40) and beat the shit out of the pulley using wood and a sledge hammer
then when the crank bolt could thread in, I used an impact to put it on the rest of the way emojiapparently, its case hardened...

edit:oh yeah, there are notches on the back of your pulley for the arms to pull on

Where'd you hear that? It should be exactly the same.

Careful, tons of people break the threads on the crank doing this by threading it in 'a couple of turns'.

Because the chassis/engine bay is different.

I don't recommend that.

Heat it up in the oven and it'll slide right on.

Since you plan on pulling the motor, why don't you rebiuld your own bottom end? That Neon motor sounds like a questionable solution to me, with water in the oil. Sure it could have happened during the accident, but it could be that the owner didn't take care of it. I'd rather use that $150 for rebiulding the factory block and knowing it's good going back in. You can save tons of money by doing all the work yourself, minus the machine work.

Depends on how much of a bastard it is to get off -I don't recommend this, but this is what I did to make my life a little easier taking this thing off and on...

Once the pulley is off, I took a dremel and slightly and I mean very slightly ground a little off the inside of the pulley where it slides on the crankshaft. I would reccomend doing this very carefully and VERY evenly around the inside of the hole.

Since I did this, I don't need a longer bolt to get the pulley off, and I have never broke an alternator belt even at 8000 RPM emoji

No, I think he is talking about heating it before you put it on. The same concept applies to big bearings. I do this at my other job. I heat these bearings in an oven to 273 degrees and they will slide right on the armature of a 10 hp. motor. I was just curious as to how hot you heat the new pulley before you re-install it.

I will keep your tip in mind.
