1997 eclipse rs, few bolts on. Block supposably stock (that s what the previous owner told me)
I posted about 2 weeks ago, after a weird knocking sound. everyone told me it was a rod bearing and a guy was cool enough to help me out a lot so I could fix it myself. Now I know that i should do a complete rebuild but I don't have money at all and barelly enough time.....So here I am gonna ask advice for what I can do...
The bearing on rod #1 was dead. I bought the car 3 months ago and from what I know everything on the block is stock so I bought regular sized rod bearings at autozone. Now, when I compared the one I spun to the new one i bought, I noticed that the new one was narrower, by like 2 millimeters. As I don't know much about all that crap I assumed that it was like that because the old bearing was fucked up and that the new one would fit. I changed the bearing, trying to carefully follow any instructions i found, torqued it correctly etc etc....
I put everything back in place and started the car. It made a weird noise for a second and then was idling fine. No knocking sound at all. I let it idle for about 5 minutes and took it for a ride. The knocking sound is still here and appears around 2800 rpms and higher. No weird sound when I stay at about 1500 rpms at constant speed.....
Did the bearing spun gain ???
Why is the new bearing narrower than the old one ?
I torque the bolts at 20ft/pd plus half a turn. I didn t use new bolts tho, I know I had to but I couln't find them anywhere !!!
I used emery cloth to remove shit from my crankshaft, which didn't appear to be VISIBLY damaged.
I ve been really carefull throughout the whole process.
Do I really have to buy new bolts for the rod ?
Maybe didn't I lubricate the parts enough prior to starting the engine ?

You need to use plastigage and then moly engine lube on all bearings before assembling the engine. A spun bearing will remove metal from the crankshaft, requiring it to be turned on a machine. You will then need oversized bearings to fit the new narrower crankshaft. The machine shop will tell you exactly what size bearings to use. An emery cloth is not machining.

alright. Thx for the infos. i ll try to find a shop that can machine the shaft. I think i m also gonna buy a rebuild kit...its a good opportunity as i have to pull the engine out anyways..
