#93703, "concept illusion stage 1 turbo kit"
Oct-10-05 06:35 AM by talonman_NT95

I saw the threads on how concept illusions is bad and what not, but the threads also directed me to the concept illusions web site and i saw the turbo kit that i am going to buy!

Concept illusions Stage 1 turbo kit---

Stage 1 turbo kits include the following:
-CI Turbo Manifold -Optional EGT bung available

-Garrett T3 .48 a/r exhaust .42 a/r compressor internally gated

-Down Pipe

-Charge Pipe

-FMU

-Walbro 255l Fuel Pump

-Stainless oil feed line with t fitting for oil supply

-Oil return line with oil pan fitting , turbo fitting

-Air Filter

-All Couplers, Clamps, and Bolts

This kit is a true bolt on! Stock engines can handle 6 psi safely and produce gains of up to 80hp.. These kits can easily be upgraded to our stage 2 or 3 setup with front mount intercooler. We also can weld on your choice of BOV flange.. call or email us for more details.

$1290

The concept Illusions stage 1 kit is selling for the best price i've seen on the web $1290.00! not bad at all for a set up that can boost up to 6psi on a stock 420a.

I have a few questions that may sound dumb, but you guys on the forum are very helpful.

I'm guessing i need a blow off valve with this kit as i see its not pictured or told in the description that one is included?

Also does this stage one kit need an intercooler?

And are new pistons (JE, Weisco) my next step after the stage 1 kit to up my boost from 4-6psi- to 6-9+ psi?

Are there any other things you guys may suggest I do before or after the install?

Should i invest in an AFC2 controller? (i plan on boosting more with new pistons/engine rebuild later on, and i wouldl ike to have my car professionally tuned as soon as i put the kit on, so is it worth buying an AFC2 right now?)

car info---95 esi 5 speed, 65000K runs awesome--obx header, aem short ram, obx ignition, eibach pro kit, kyb GR-2's

You should probably just give them a call to discuss this stuff. I think they are in an out of the shop all day, so you might have to call a couple times to get a live person. I'm sure they would love the opportunity to discuss it with you personally. You might take what they tell you and post it up. I'm sure you could get a few responses on whether you "should" buy it or not.

USE SEARCH! This has been covered more than a million times i'm sure. The majority of users on here also do not recommend Concept Illusions (i'm not one of them, I have never dealt with them so I am opinion-less).

i would say go with them. For 1300$$ you cant beat it, and if you dont like one of the products you get or something is wrong, etc etc..they WILL replace it, shawn is very good about that. it just takes awhile to get in touch w/ them b/c he's understaffed. i got my TB bored out from them (took 2 times) and its still not 100% to my satisfaction and he said he would guarentee the next time would be perfect, but i dont feel like sendin it back, all i get is a lil surge when rolling but it might be from changing out the IAC and TPS sensors

Exactly.
Who says you should expect something to be done right the first time? Oh yeah. I forgot the triangle....

You can have it fast, cheap, or right - pick any two.

Then again, if you get it cheap and it's not right, it should be fairly fast, but I guess we don't play that way anymore. I mean, if you have to send something back three times to get it done right, then you only got it cheap, right?

Wow.

To think there are people here who would send their heads off to these amateurs and let them permanently modify it scares the shit outta me. emoji

what fuckiing scares the shit outa me is that there are still people on here who think these sub-standard shitsticks at CI are the way to go. Im not sure what saddens me more: the fact that customer service has plumitted or that the customer is getting more stupid about what customer service is.

Do i really need to address how colossaly stupid this sounds? And this form a memeber who SUPPORTS them...
OMFG

i mean for fucks sake, how many times does it take to bore a TB correctly. We've been boreing them for years now, its not like its a new experimental mod...i've done metalsmithing and fadrication.. it aint that fuckin hard!

sorry, you just hit a sore spot with the whole CI thing....

just answer this, if a Co. cant do the small stuff right, and cant do the small customer service things, why would yopu WANT to use that company for the bigger things?

sure, its just a kit, one thats not complete, has questionable parts, and may take 6 mos to get. And thats not even taking into account what kind of "customer service" you'll get. What if a few parts are missing? if it takes them 3 times to do a TB correctly, what makes you think they can do a $1300.00 turbo kit any better, faster or more correctly?

My opinion is still the same.

For $1300, all its faults still make it worth the money as long as you're not looking for insane power, or perfection out of the box.

agreed, and as for it being a true bolt on, if you believe that you might need to look into more threds on turbos because its missing several key parts but bang for buck if nothing else the turbo, mani, fmu, etc is well worth the money again thats based on bang for buck.

I appreciate the further comments on the subject...

As for bang for buck, its the best out there. $1290

And as far as there customer service goes, when i buy the kit, i figured i could even drive to the shop, i live in cleveland, ohio and the shop is located somewheres in pennsylvania, only if it came to that.

Also if there is anyone on this forum who has bought and installed a CI stage turbo kit, i'de love to see pics and hear how it went.

other than that, thanks for the comments

Before I would refer to anything as being the best, I would ask the following questions... (adapted from the definition of "best")

best Pronunciation Key (bst)

adj. Superlative of good.
Surpassing all others in excellence, achievement, or quality; most excellent: the best performer?
Most satisfactory, suitable, or useful; most desirable: the best solution?

adv. Superlative of well.
In a most excellent way; most creditably or advantageously?
To the greatest degree or extent?

n.
One that surpasses all others?
The best part, moment, or value?

The optimum condition or quality?
The supreme effort one can make?

I guess, if the kit was as complete and well-built as the HRC kit, it would be the best value, but no dice imo. These people need three tries to get a fucking TB bored correctly. Eddy Fierro bored the one off my car at night, in his backyard, in the rain and got it right the first time. If Eddy Fierro came up with a turbo system, I would support it because Eddy has demonstrated that he's not in the business of peddaling half-assed hack jobs and has a proven track record. Eddy puts his name on everything he does and he makes it right the first time. Just as a comparisson of value and customer service.

look dude, ultimately the decision is yours. Personally I would not buy the kit just based on their quality that I've seen( i.e. actual pictures of the kit). Aftermarket turbo's are no joke, if you dont know what your doing, you will fuck your car up, end of story. You need to do a lot more research for your own self, dont always trust what a company's website will tell you, they are just trying to sell a product.

How many people on this site have experience dealing with CI?

How many of those people have made mention of waiting forever and a day only to receive some fucked up garbage that could have been done right the first time by a high school shop student?

How many people have bought this turbo kit?

Isn't there already another thread titled "Concept Illusions Turbo Kit" that details all the included components that could have been read before blindly copying and pasting the list like it's big news here? Why yes, there is such a thread.

Sorry, Luke.

The Cliff's Notes?

What do you guys think of this turbo system?

-It's an incomplete system offered by a vendor that can't even bore a TB correctly. There are better vendors out there.

I hate to see quality vendors who get things done right the first time lose business because some slick-named body kit peddler decides to undercut their prices and offer lackluster products and service.

If the shoe fits.

I'm done with any and all CI posts.

EDIT:
C'mon, Luke. You know me better than this. This thread will probably be locked or deleted shortly. Ah well. Not like this hasn't all be covered before...

I knew I should have included a disclaimer. None of that was directed at you, B, I was merely pointing out the fact that he was asking about the price and what's included. For the price, it's a good deal. What matters is will he be satisfied, which only he can tell.

I have zero dealings with CI, so I'm refraining from commenting on them. (see how easy that was emoji)

All you had to do was input the facts you know, which are already known from above.

That's all, I wasn't making a stab at you, just your 'misreading' of his question.

a lot of people here like to talk shit about CI without ever having done business with them. they've read a lot of one-sided stories with peoples complaints and drown their own second-hand conclusions. the sad thing is a lot of people who have had problems with CI made posts with all their complaints and didn't get around to updating once their problems were resolved by CI. obviously this doesn't express the whole story. i have personally dealt with them and was more than satisifed with their customer service. the product i ordered was not satisfactory when i received it. i contacted CI, was given a FULL refund AND a replacement product sent out at no-charge which i received several days later. yes it should have been right the first time but i was very pleased and more than satisfied with how well they made up for their mistake.

aside from that i'd listen to dino before a lot of the other members here emoji

Funny how that works in the business world, huh? if someone has a good experience, they'll tell 2 people. if they have a bad experience, they'll tell 10. Its called word of mouth...which if you're truly a smart & reputable company (esp. in the tuning scene) you'll know the damage that word of mouth can cause and try to do shit right.
I don't support CI becuase they don't support us. they sell WELL DOCUMENTED crap; regardless of IF they make it right EVENTUALY and have no tangable positive track record to negate any of the bad stuff.

dino knows his shit, yes! but when i can go on ebay and other places and peice all that stuff out new and seperate for less than 1290.00, given CI's reputation, i dont see it as such a good deal.

First of all, it's drawn their own conclusions. Past tense of to draw, you know. Second, it's not like people are posting that they bought complicated components or machine work. They are buying bored throttle bodies which are a simple proceedure. I've seen it done once and could duplicate the process with decent results, given the proper equipment to do so.

That's no excuse. It's like saying, "The dentist who screwed up my root canal was really good about not charging me for the three return visits I had to make before the blinding pain was remedied." When a vendor slips up once and makes proper amends, that is when their rapid damage control is noteworthy - not when nearly every comment made about them involves them fucking up and needing at least two tries to get it right. Especially when it's something simple.

Yeah. We're all a bunch of grab-assing fuck holes who don't have any room to talk because we're interested in looking out for the new people who might not be able to afford to deal with a fuck-up.

You know what happens when new people spend a lot of money on part or services from businesses that constantly screw up? They get fed up with the hobby and go elsewhere. The reason people like Tim, Deej and I get all bent out of shape with this sort of thing is because the well-being of the 2GNTer is our priority. We don't want to see anyone have to shell out their hard-earned cash for mods only to have that sick feeling in the pit of their stomach when they open the box and see that they got a piece of discount crap. THAT is why we do this.

If someone wants to peddle their wares here, fine. If someone wants to rationalize poor quality and service in the interest of saving a buck or two, fine, but they're going to hear both sides of the story. The side that says how it should be and your side, which shows rationalization of yet another instance of fuck-uppery.

you're right - it is good to get both sides of the story. it's important to emphasize that the CI kit is NOT on the same level as a STAR or HAHN kit. but it's also important to note that for SOME people this is what they're looking for. they're willing to pay less for a lower quality product. CI is filling a niche in the market which was not currently being filled by anyone. not everyone is willing to shell out big bucks for a top-of-the-line kit. not everyone is looking for maximum performance. some people just want a little boost in power without breaking the bank. for those people the CI kit is a good choice. i'll admit that the CI kit is NOT for me. i'd rather put in the extra time and money to build a custom kit. i doubt you'd ever catch dino buying a CI kit either. the point is that as long as you understand the drawbacks and limitations of the kit it's not that bad a deal.

and you're right - there isn't any excuse for a business making mistakes like that in the first place. however i do take some peace-of-mind in knowing that if i order something from CI they will do everything in their power to correct their mistakes. i can think of quite a few larger vendors that more or less tell you to fuck-off once they've got your money... emoji

ANYWAY, how many people here have been screwed by CI? I bet you won't use all of your fingers. Now, how many people have purchased from CI? Obviously enough to keep them in business all this time. Just because all you hear are the bad sayings, doesn't mean they haven't had a million other good transactions. And even the people that didn't get their parts as described are not complaining about them! Wonder why. I'm not taking the sides of anyone, but it seems YOU guys are the ones that need to understand there are two sides of this. emoji

I could of told you what was going to be posted and who was going to post in this thread before it began; pathetic.

I have dealt with CI, I bought third package rebuid kit. Customer service is good but I won't buy their kit due to that fact is out for a while and do have dyno numbers to back their kit up. The only thing that looks questionable in stage one is the manifold. Everything else in the kit is another company product. So for anyone that has not dealt with CI should STFU and go about your buisness. It is one thing to have a comment about company but is another thing when you make it to personal like most of you guys are towards CI emoji

Agreed. When I decided I wanted to have a turbo, I looked into
ALL my options...for me, Hahn and Star are more than I can afford. After some more research I decided to build my own kit, not only am I saving money, but I am building it the way I want it, and not having to replace any parts from a kit. Plus there is more than enough info on this website to build a good, high quality kit, that fits your needs. Another thing, dont get offended by what anyone says, everyone here has the same interest: the love of a DSM, and to exchange knowledge with fellow DSM'ers.

Amen, haha.
