#93150, "Howell Automotive 2.0 Performance Block"

Ok I'm new to the site but have had my car for about 2 years, and I'm not sure about the specs on some of the internals of the 420A motor. Sooner than later I will be going the turbo route on my car and once I start co-oping at my school, money won't be too much of an option either. I was wondering if anyone had the Howell Automotive 2.0L performance block already built for "race applications only" it has everything built to factory specs but it is just built with performance parts such as JE forged pistons and Eagle rods and other things of that nature. I had a few question about this block...

1) They have five options on the cams which are Crane cams... the numbers are 431-0010, 431-0012, 431-0014, 431-0016 or 431-0018. Which of these would be the best way to go for a turbo application?

2) Also, I would assume that the best piston to get considering that the engine would be turbo would be to get the lowest compression piston (8.6), would this be correct?

3) They have two choices on which longblock you can order, one is the longblock without the core, and one is the longblock with the core... and for some reason it says that the one WITH the core is cheaper than the one WITHOUT it, any explanations for this??

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!

#1) Stock cams are great for a boosted application. I don't think the crane cams work very well because of their overall design. Custom grind is the way to go so far because nobody has designed a very good cam for our cars when we are turbo'ed. Crower 2 turbo cams I think are the best so far. It's a shame too because I believe cams and our head is the limiting factor to big power for our cars.

#2) You would be correct in assuming that, at least for the ease of tuning.

#3) They charge more for a long block with a core because the core they are referring to is your engine. You have to send it to them in order to get your core charge back.

Best new peron post ever.

Welcome.

Yes the Howell blocks are built with aftermarket parts using high performance specs.

Your question about compression all depends on how much boost you want.

The more boost you want, the lower compression you want.

*Search* Hell no, who needs forged internals...

*Search* Stock cams work best with the 420a-turbo. Honestly.

*Search* But yes, 8.6 for high boosting.

*Search* Do you know what a "core" is?

If you send them your block, its cheaper, plain and simple. Common sense should have told you that. This way, they probably have your block checked, and build yours, or just use yours to build another customers. It saves them time in finding you a "core" to use for their "long block"

All of your questions could have answered in just the click of using the Search button located at the top of the page.

Just a little hint of advice for ya there pal.

Anyway, welcome to the family!

as far as the cams, the 431-0014 are crane's 'turbo grind'. I had them in an NA setup and the weren't bad. The 431-0012 are a little better in NA form, and I believe they'll out do the 14's in a turbo application. They have the same amount of overlap as well. The 10's are a mild cam, but they also have the same overlap as the other two.

If it was my choice, I'd go with the 12's.

**EDIT**
The 16's have +10* overlap than the 12's, which is bad for boost, and the 18's have even more than that.

They are built with performance parts. They are balanced and blue printed. We revise oiling for increased bearing life.

If your planning on the turbo, then you want to go with the turbo cams which are the 14's. They will work fine in an NA application until you put your turbo on. Now on one of mine, I ran the 16's with a turbo to good effect, but being you new to this stick with the 14's. We do offer Crowler and Comp, but I will only use Crane in my personal engines and I only recommend the Crane. Crane is just the best plain and simple.

Originally posted by clipse_2005 2) Also, I would assume that the best piston to get considering that the engine would be turbo would be to get the lowest compression piston (8.6), would this be correct?

That is correct. We have used 10.5's with a turbo, but you have to be very careful with your tunning at 10.5. Again being your new stay with the 8.6.

The "Core" is your old engine. You can supply us with an engine to build, and it is cheaper. If we supply the engine, then you have to pay for the engine we started with. It is much easier to buy the engine from us, especially if you are far away. Shipping an old engine to us build is expensive, probably more than what shipping it would cost.

Now, do recommend you go with the Long Rod motor, they make more torque and the turbos love them. The size of the engine stays the same, it is just a longer rod, and the piston is shorter. It doesn't cost anymore, and all my personal engines are long rod motors.

thanks for the help guys... I know what a core is I wasn't aware that you could actually send it to them and have them work with that, which is why that confused the hell out of me. I'm more new to the whole turbo part moreso than the modifications. We have some very credible tuners here in Cincinnati that definately know what they are doing. How many lbs of boost could you safely run on this crate motor? I'm guessing there aren't many limits with the extent of the build up of this motor. Sorry for not searching for some of this stuff but I had so many combined questions I figured it would be easier to post it up this way.

with the proper fueling system and a built block, the biggest limiting factor with our cars becomes traction. you can make some pretty serious power but putting it to the ground with a FWD becomes problematic.

Thats one line of bullshit, lol.

In Ohio, we dont have any decent tuners at all really.
The ONLY decent dyno/tuning in Ohio is Madd Dogg.

All the other places think they know what they are doing, but I know of 5 people you could call right now in the Cinci area who have fucked up shit now cuz of the so-called "tuners" in your area.

If you have any tuning done to your car, drive the xtra 1 hour from Cinci and head to Madd Dogg.

Trust, I know of almost every dyno in the whole state.

Then you have heard of Dave Blundell at Zerolift Autolab here in Cincinnati... he is currently in the process of tuning an 11 second all motor civic which is quite the beast, but eh, what do I know, I just live here haha

Anyone can "tune" a fast car.

The point is, anyone can say they tuned their car, lets just see the power gains of proof from it, and how long the motor actually runs for after its been "tuned".

Power depends on tuning. With bad tuning you can break anything. According to Eagle the rods will hold 200 hp each, so 800 hp (with proper tunning) I have run 600 hp on the set up myself now.

As far as Howell goes, they are one of the largest supporters of the 420a, however there service is lacking a bit. Not to speak badly about them so hear me out. There have been more than a few members who have ordered motor kits and the delivery of the product was a long and delayed one. If you want anything from Howell, do not be in a hurry. I have never heard any issues with howell answering the phone or being available to talk to. But when you sell a product to a consumer, the consumer expects delivery in a timely manner.

AFX if you expect the consumers to call you after a bad experience then you need to spend a small amount of time thinking about that one. Search the board a bit and try to find the members who feel the service was lacking and evaluate each situation to find ways to improve. That might help if you want to improve. I do recall one member requesting his money back for a kit because he hadnt recieved it in over 4 months (i think it was 4 months, not sure).

The AFX ECU's are a diff story so i am not considering that when looking at complaints.

If you are looking at a budget motor, i recommend piecing a kit together. Rods and pistons can be had new from a company that sells on ebay for 704.00. He is there all the time and is very courteous via email. That price cant be beat.

Mancini Racing runs specials on Eagle rods for 275.00 every now and then. I deal with them for my antique Mopar parts, they are a fast productive company and i have never been displeased with them.

As far as your Head, consider a race port job, PT Cruiser lash adjusters and stock cams. Take the money for a set of cams and put the money into a better investment.... fuel management.

Bottom end.... Howell is very average on their price for a oil pump, if you are going to slowly build up a kit then you can buy a new one cheaper if you watch for sales at diff times of the year at different places.

I am not telling you to stay clear of howell by no means. I am just telling you to be a smart consumer and be wise with your money, you owe that to yourself.

I personally talked with howell on the phone a time or two when i was looking at how i wanted to go with my motor and the saleman did not appear to be eager to sell. When i want to spend a deal of money, i may know what i want, but i want to be Sold on the idea. I expect a salesman to be just that, not a Cashier. If i want a cashier i will just order over the net. I am not saying the salesman needs to break his back for me, Just sell me on the idea or taylor the kit that best fits me. Dont sell me something i dont need, if you want my money then find a product that will benefit me in addition to what i am considering.

I have noticed Hahn racecraft salesman have treated me with that type of mentality. They are eager to assist, sell, and leave the customer with a happy feeling they spent the money they did.

Search the site, you have many options, feel free to ask all of our opinions.

As far as a company, I appreciate and respect the time your eyes are here on 2gnt trying to assist members. I can honestly say i dont see you here trying top peddle your products just offer assistance with them and I respect that. I wish Hahn spent some time here this year, he usually does. I despise companys that come here to sell only. I understand thier phone is for tech support but there is much more hwere on this site that on a phone. Exile spends the most time i have ever seen any company spend here, it does pay off in many ways.

There is a reason "heresay" is not admisable in court, mostly because it is BS. Your repeating things that are flat not true. One we have never taken 4 months fill an order for an engine kit ever, that is total BS. It is a made up story. If somebody has a complaint, all they have to do is pick up the phone and call and ask for me, "Gary." I own the place, so if you have a problem call me. We have very few problems and I take care of them quickly. I would appreachiate you not repeating heresay that is false.

Thank You.

Gary

Today is October 13th.

Sure, it wasn't 4 months, that would be total BS. Hell, it wasn't even an engine kit, that would be a made up story.

Hmmm should I bring up this thread: http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=4&topic_id=51250&mesg_id=51250&listing_type=search

Nothing but complaints of Howell's Service. Add this as another thread to the ever growing list of Howell displeased customers.

To be fair, 10 of the 58 posts in that thread contained positive comments about Howell.

I had to wait only 3 months for my built short block. Although they may take awhile, i have not had any problems with the block. It has been running strong and i am very happy i chose Howell to have a block built for me. They do sell great products for the 420A and just b/c they take awhile to deliver does not mean no one should buy from them. They will help you with anything you need. This is just my experience with them.

One thing to think about guys when it comes to ordering a built block from a vendor. They have to get good cores from either a junk yard or a previous customer. They then have to make sure the block is good and have their machinist do all the machine work. At the same time they have to wait for companies like Eagle, JE, Clevite and others for the internals and such. If you go with the full long block even worse sometimes as I have seen crane and others take 2 months to have cams and gears instock. IM not saying its right or wrong to take that long Im just saying these are built to order as they are custom per the customers specs. Its not like he has a bunch of these just laying around ready to ship. I can tell you from experience it took 4 to get my machine shop to finish my last head and it was just a assembly and oversized valve job deal. The block took almost 6 weeks for them to bore for me and balance the assembly. Its not like Howell has a machine shop in the building they use one of their vendors Im sure.

Sometimes Howell is very fast. My timing belt broke on the eclipse a couple weeks ago. I had all the top end refreshed and had parts from howell in 2 days and my shop did the full top end and timing belt, water pump and tensioner pulley in 2 days thats the fastest I have seen yet.

BTW: if your in Southern Maryland Jimmy Raders in Hughesville is a kick ass shop. Cost me 1K to have the topend redone but he did it in 2 days and I had my baby back as good as new.

Lets see how long this stays stock.
