I was driving to work one day minding my own business and the next thing i know im getting pulled over by a county cop! "73 in a 55" he says and im outraged cuz my speedo said 60! He was nice and let me go but that got me thinkin...over the next couple of days my speedo went from reading 13 over, to 20 under, to just plain old zero. i took the speed sensor out and all the teeth were ground off of that little black gear. i threw another one in there and it did the exact same thing. at first i blamed it on the phantom grip. how it could have caused that is anybody's guess and i wasnt about to tear into my trans to find out why. Ive been driving without the speedo for a while then suddenly, today, my car started acting really weird (i wont go into explanation but ill say that i stopped at a gas station and popped the hood and i discovered that the timing belt was loose) so i drove her home and decided to pull the motor and voila' the timing belt tensioner had failed and im lucky i caught it in time or else something more serious may have happened. well anyway, getting back on track, while i had the motor out i delved into the mystery of the broken speedometer. with the sensor out, you can see the differential and the speed sensor gear too. i turned the diff by hand with one of the axles to examine the teeth on the gear and then i remembered i had installed safing brackets on the diff when i put the pg in. sure enough, they were in a position where they would come dangerously close to the ss gear and that is why i have no speedo. tomorrow i will tear into the trans and grind down the ends of the safing brackets and hopefully that will take care of it. while im at it i will see how the pg is doin and ill post an update. its been in the car for about 6k miles. moral of the story: it doesnt matter what you buy, you always have to end up modifying it. Or painting it. Or breaking it. so dont forget to grind down your safing brackets! oh yeah, and does anyone want to sell me a speed sensor gear? tia

Strange. I remember bolting mine up and saying discussing with my buddy how it was pretty obvious they needed to be ground down before we could bolt them in.
Good luck.
I'd advise not taking chances with timing belt issues. If mine looks funny, I'm not driving it anywhere. Not worth the risk.

Good info for those with the safing brackets.
I just had my diff pin welded in with a few spot welds on each side.
On another note, should you be able to easily pull the speedo sensor out? I tried to pull mine out on my silver car cause the speedo stopped working, and found the black gear prevented it from coming off the trans. Is this normal?

yeah you should be able to take the speed sensor out pretty easily. The only reason i would think that it wouldnt come out is if the little locating dowel on the bottom of the black ss gear got wedged in the hole somehow...
well, i took the tranny apart today and inspected the pg and surprisingly, everything is still intact! There is very little wear on the pg itself or the gears for that matter so im happy. i got a chance to grind down the diff pin safing brackets too and now the trans is all back together. now i just gotta put her back in; wish me luck!
