#92342, "2.0L to 3.0L VR-4 swap??"

Ok, I've been doing a lot of research in deciding what I really want to so for my car (97 Avenger). I have come to the conclution that an engine swap would be a damn good project, spanning most of next year. I've done a bunch of reaseach on this site and (although most of you guys are eclipse or talon owners) everybody seems to know what they're talking about. so here goes: I want to go from my rebuilt 2.0L to the 3.0L in the 3000GT VR-4's. I know....you're probly like "HA!....dumbass, what's he thinking?". well I'm thinking that a little metal-play and money can make it happen. the problem is this........i don't know where to start; i've never done anything like this proposed idea.
I guess what i'm asking is for a leading step in the right direction.

PS- twin turbo maybe?

nah just kiddin, well kinda. That would be one bitchhhh of a project, and isn't the vr4 AWD? I think it's way much more of a problem than it's worth, but hey if you wanna do it, don't let anyone stop you, i hope the motor would fit though...

and i see you say, "with a LITTLE metal work and money" i hope that by little you mean, a freaking assload, and i also hope you're a master fabricator

Same thought here. Unless you are going for some show stopper awesome I did it myself type project, I don't really see the reason and or point that validates the time, effort, and money you will put into this type of project. If you choose to take it, good luck and keep us updated on it, that would be a nice car in the final results.

I think you should call these guys:

http://www.exileracing.com/

They swap 3.0l 6G72 V6's into Avengers and they build turbo kits for that V6. They have done some work with mating a manual tranny to the V6 and might be able to advise you there. I think that should be your first call.

If you want a 3.0 that can take a beating just swap in the galant/eclipse v-6. Those motors are incredible stout and the cylinder walls are very very strong. It's a fairly easy swap and low budget. You also have the benefit of aftermarket support from ERT, in terms of turbo kits. I've seen the motors internally and i do not scoff at them by any means. When i say their cylinder walls are massive i mean it! You could take those v-6's to just about any lenghts you want.

Thanks guys.

The VR-4 DOHC V-6 is big... there's just a lot of motor, too much for our smaller engine bay.

The SOHC 3.0L 6G72 will fit. With the use of some Avenger parts the swap could be completed fairly easily, until you get to wiring. The A604 auto trans out of an Avenger will bolt up, but you'll need the Avenger TCU, and ECU unless you want to go with some form of stand alone like a MegaSquirt or more expensive alternative. A manual transmisson will require even more fabrication to "bolt" in and get running.

A SOHC cam will fill up our engine bay pretty well the DOHC is a monster in comparison.

My thoughts exactly ^^^^, just put in the 3.0, drop the whole VR-4 thing. Finding one is going to be a PITA, and making it work worse. You can travel a road that's at least been traveled before and still have something that's unquie. I've dealt with Exile in the past ... good people.

I would think that someone who had done "a lot of research" would have some kind of idea where to start. emoji What did you research, your turbo choice for the new engine? A boost controller, perhaps. LOL It's the dreamers that come up with the ideas which further the platform, but stick with the pistol you got, son. Otherwise you'll shoot your eye out. Or shoot yourself in the foot. Or maybe shoot someone else in the foot's eye. Or... shit. I need a smoke.

That twin engine MK1 "durocco" could kick your cars ass any day!!! Hell if a guy can run a 1.8L 16v in the front and a 2.0 16v in the rear and make the car run.. you can do anything. Question to yourself is, "do i really want to deal with the fucking bullshit that i will have to go thru?". Things that are *unique* are that way for a reason, things that are *never been done before* are that way for a reason.. and what reason may that be?? IT'S A FUCKING PAIN IN THE ASS THAT NO ONE CARES TO DEAL WITH!!! If it's something that has "never been done before" in a dsm, it's because it's 1. not worth it, 2. nearly* impossible, 3. hasn't been thought of yet. Your idea has been thought up so many times, and proven *near* impossible every time. *BTW My DD will be a MK2 GTI, 0-60 will be almost as fast as beloved daisy. (Call my a VW nut,I don't care! It's something that will never parish from my heart. Just like my love for my 2gnt.)

You will love the car, I promise you. It's a true car, very mechanical. Just like our 2gnts. You have it easy out there sir, Cali is the mecca of all that is VW in this country. You should be able to find something fairly easy. Look on the VWvortex in the regional forums. I just inquired about a MKII GTI with a 98'Jetta VR6 swap.

Hey man, sounds like a pretty intense project. My best friend drives a 92 VR-4, and he's shown me some pretty cool VR-4/TT Stealth motor swaps. Check out 3si.org, and ask some questions. If it were possible to swap in a base 3000gt DOHC, then you'd also have the ability to supercharge or turbocharge, but I don't know if that can be done or not. But before you set yourself on the SOHC swap, do yourself a favor and check out 3si. It would be really cool if it were pulled off.
