#92203, "low vacuum, slight misfire lower rpms, one buck at 4500rpm"

Well as the title says, I just got my car running again today, big freakin sigh of relief, anyways, the car was missing pretty bad when i first got it started, so i made a run down to advance auto parts and picked up some new plugs/wires figuring since the car had been sitting there for like 2 months being turned on/off/on/off/on/off that the plugs had been fouled. Put the new plugs and wires in with some di-electric grease, started it up again, and it was slightly better, misfiring wasn't as bad, but still present none the less, and vacuum was at about 11-12in/hg. So i took it out on the road and started driving around the neighborhood, when i was at partiall throttle at low rpms, like maybe 1500-2000, it was missing/bucking/hesitating a bit. Then if i kept it wide open throttle from 1500-2000rpm all the way up, at 4500rpm, the car would give me ONE buck and then keep climbing. But if i were to not go WOT until say 3000-3500, the car wouldn't buck at 4500. And then when i would let off to blow it off, the BOV didn't sound like it was moving as much air as it should be. Usually it will make a sound like a greddy type-s kinda, but now it just lets air out without making the sound. I don't really care about the fact that the sound isn't there, im just worried that it means something else is wrong.

The fact that the vacuum is so low makes me wonder if timing may have skipped a tooth retarding the timing a bit, and i suppose that might account for the other problems. Anyone have any other ideas, im thinkin maybe crank/cam position sensors? anyone please let me know, im really happy to have this thing running again, but now i just have to work out the kinks, so help me out! much thanks

I'd hunt down the vac problem. Borrow or buy a vac gauge and get that straight. Are you getting any CEL's? If you skipped a tooth timing-wise you'd probably would have gotten a CEL after driving to the part store. Do you still have your EGR? That's a shot in the dark, but it gets a vac source and "could" cause some of the symptoms.

just because the vacuum is low doesn't mean there is a leak, clogged exhaust can cause low vacuum too, but if the exhaust was clogged it would usually be around 0in/hg and it doesn't sound clogged, and what do you mean buy a vacuum gauge? i've got a vacuum/boost gauge, which is where i got the 11in/hg from. And no i'm not getting any check engine lights. Yes i still have my EGR pipe, anyone else think this could be it, i cleaned it out a good bit before i put it back on, anyone else have any ideas?

what are you running for a map bypass?. i had simular problems but not that extreme..(slight misfire, crappy idle) i use the ml, and cleaned it out! ran great! i would try to find out why you have such a low vac. leaks anywhere?

check your valve timing, thats what im gonna do, thats a major cause for low vacuum

Valve timing would be a place to start, but unless you just put a belt on, why would your timing change all of a sudden? I would think that timing would be adv or retarded too far and set a code if you skipped a tooth esp after a little drive. Have a look at the inspection cover and check timing, it can't hurt. BTW a vac gauge is a just like your boost gauge but it's a little more sensitive and I like it to track down vac leaks b/c you can isolate lines a bit easier.

Well Curtis if you dont want to take anyone's advise then go solve this most basic problem on your own. I get a kick out of all your ignorant posts when you showed up on this board and now a more humble version of the same when you cant troubleshoot the most basic of driveability issues.

The guys in this post are only trying to share idea's. neither of them is being the arrogant ass that you are so well at playing. You ever wonder why any of the members like myself that know this motor inside out never post to your problems?

11-12 inhg is your first clue you dont have a tune up issue. Have you even checked for a vac leak, my guess is not. Granted this is not your problem, it needs to be done. Clogged exhaust is not your problem either....i will let you sit puzzled as to why. I bet the motor feels pretty good at high rpms doesnt it? Are the pieces of the puzzle starting to fit? perhaps you should borrow the vantage, more expensive tool must be able to fix the problem.

Why would you use another vac gauge......most elementry reason....to eliminate a faulty or inaccurate gauge. 12in is a big difference from 14in.

Here is a subtle hint and the only help i will ever give you: your cams are off, most likely the intake is advanced 1-2 teeth and the exhaust is retarded 1-2 teeth.

This is my first and last post in this thread. Anyone else that would like to discuss idea's and why? send me a pm
Terry

Check for clogged egr tueb, that happened to me a few months ago when i still had it on. My vacuum was reading around 10-11 when my egr was clogged. But if not i am betting that is did jump a tooth on your timing, i have had some problems before where my vac was low and i redid the timing and it fixed it.

terry man i'm not tryin to be an asshole, i guess it comes off a little wrong online when you can't hear how i say things. I'm not gonna start arguing with you, in fact i greatly appreciate your contribution and all the others that posted in this thread, i'm takin everyones insight into consideration here. I'm by no means trying to be arrogant. I know there are tons of people that know tons more than me, my apalogies to all incase it came out that way.

Alright back to the technically discussion, yea i have checked around for a vacuum leak, i checked all the ports on the intake manifold and all my connections, and they're all good. But like you said Terry, this isn't my problem anyway. My first thought when i saw the low vacuum was that my timing had skipped a tooth. But i thought it was interesting how it would give me one buck at 4500rpms, i was talkin to dino last night and he bet that was something wrong with the map signal. Now i drove my car again today for a while, still no CEL's, doesn't seem to be misfiring at idle anymore, but it's still kinda rough at partial throttle, and the boost isn't very steady up in the higher rpms which is what kind of made me worry, it seems to almost cut in and out, but when it's in, it pulls really well. So if anyone has anymore insight please feel free to say them, the reason i make these posts is so i can get ideas, so despite how it may have come off, i do appreciate it and do take it into thought.

Actually this sounds a lot like how mine felt right after I strapped up the turbo. When it pulled, it pulled -good-, but the rest of the time it felt like it wasn't getting crap for power.

My guess (and this coming from the guy who just replaced 3 cracked pistons, so read into that what you will), it's not getting enough fuel. How much boost are you running? Have you done anything with the fuel system? Do you have an A/F or EGT? Maybe strap a voltmeter onto your O2 sensor wire and see if it's running really lean (or even maybe rich? I'm not sure how well the stock ecu sees boost, I'm wiring up a megasquirt for mine).
