#92172, "Thicker/bigger bolt through front motor mount mod"

Thanks to the help of wickedESi I did that Thicker/bigger bolt through the front mount mod saturday and I must say WOW. Drives a hell of a lot smoother transitioning through the gears. I have a stock front mount with energy susp mm inserts so I had to use a thicker bolt(5/8) than wickedESi(1/2) since he has Matt's solid front mount. I couldnt find a writeup for this or another thread when I searched but I can make a writeup if anyone wants if there isnt one. Wicked is more excited about this bolt mod than his new turbo kit he just made. 5 bucks makes my car feel quite a bit different. Thank you whoever came up with this idea emoji and points to you if i find out who it was.

Go ahead n throw up the writeup. Doesn't hurt to have the info searchable later. Plus I'll be putting the crossmember back on my car soon...might as well do this.

Supplies:
5/8 hardened bolt (forgot the length) nut and lock washer

Directions

Start by jacking up the front of your car and put it on jackstands

Unbolt the crossmember. Rear 2 bolts first 14mm bolts and then the front 2 17mm bolts.

Then, take out the bolt/nut going through the front motor mount my bolt was different as I had replaced it before but i believe stock size is 17mm on both sides. Your crossmember with mount should fall down now so make sure your holding it lol.

Next, unbolt the bracket that surrounds the mount from the block. 2 17mm bolts the top bolt was a little tough as there wasnt much clearance to get the socket on there with the radiator hose in the way.

The bracket should come out now. Take the braket and use a drill with a stepped drillbit to widen the hole on the bracket to 5/8ths on each side (may need some wd40 when it starts smoking as you drill).

Replace everything with in reverse order using new bolt and nut with lock washer so it doesnt loosen and fall out.

Have fun
I'll make a more detailed one later with the pics i took but for now here you all go.

Sorry I'm not exactly sure what your talking about, but could someone just clarify a couple questions. What hole or holes are you drilling out bigger? Is the new thicker bolt your putting in the bolt that slides through the mount...and why would you want it thicker? I just took out my solid front mount today because I've just gotten sick of stopping at stoplights and having my car feel like its going to rattle to pieces. It was fine at first but its just gotten really bad overtime and everything just seems loose. Does the prothane insert shake the car quite a bit yet and is it a full replacement for the stock one or do you just (obviously) have to insert pieces into the stock mount. Sorry I know its a lot of questions but thanks to anyone whose got some answers!!!!!

You use a thicker bolt to further lock down that front motor mount. It is the one that goes through the actual mount. If you took out your solid mount because it vibrated too much, you don't want to do this mod. I, on the other hand, can't wait to do it. With the XtremeRS solid front mount, I love the feel of the car. emoji

anybody see any benefits of this if someone has solid urithane mounts, not the inserts, but the actual mounts?

I loved my XtremeRS solid front mount right when I got it in too. It wasnt an annoying vibration at all; it gave such a nice power feeling throughout the car but overtime so many different things started vibrating and only some I could fix. There is some vibration/rattling/squeaking coming from where the hood bolts onto the frame but I cant seem to find exactly where its coming from. I hated to take it out yesterday, but it was just getting really bothersome. So are those prothane inserts really just inserts or do they replace that whole inner piece. And where can I get them the cheapest?

Tim - the stock bolt going through the mount is thinner than the holes going through the mount and bracket(A lot thinner) My stock bolt was acutally a little bent from the engine still torqueing a little and banging on that bolt. Does the bolt fit snug through the hole in your prothane full mounts? If not then its the same deal and you can simply get a thicker bolt that fits snug and then drill the holes. I think the stock bolt is 3/8 or smaller and the stock mount hole side and bracket size is 5/8. With extremeRS solid front mount its 1/2. Correct me if im wrong guys.

Turby - points 2 u

clipse - the energy suspension mm inserts are just urethane inserts you put in. They vibrate my car a little more than before but it isnt annoying imo. Tim has Prothane full urethane mounts i believe that you burn/cut out the stock rubber mount and press these in. My inserts were something like $15 but its been so long i forgot who i got them from. Also are you selling your solid front mount. I might know a buyer if so? let me know how much if so too.
