Okay here is the deal a friend of mine is parting out a dodge avenger and it has the 420a in it. The motor threw a timing belt and has around 140K miles on it.

what would be a fair price for the shortblock with the pistons and crank and block?

Assuming the pistons are still in good shape.. ~$300-$500 depending the condition with that many miles.

Yeah, those prices are in the ball park. I just got a 420a with crank and pistons and rods from a NEON at a yard for 250 with 48K on it - that should give you a rough idea.
