ok I know the technical difference between a super and turbo charger one is belt driven and the other is exhaust driven i also know that superchargers have instant boost where as turbos have "turbo lag" until rpms are high enough to make boost ok now my question is could someone theoretically have both? pros and cons to this? also general pros and cons to supercharger vs turbo I know the superchargers are less commonly used but why? also if turbos are better why do the super super fast top alchol dragsters all use them(I do realize there is a difference between say a 150hp car and an 8000hp car) also from time to time i see these "electric" superchargers on ebay they claim a 20-40hp increase to the wheels is there any truth to this as i am skeptical also is there anything such as a "true" electric supercharger?? it sounds good on paper at least http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=34284&item=4561652740&sspagename=WDVW

Yes. It used to be done on factory works rally cars back in the 70s-80s. They made a shitton of horsepower and were suspected the cause of many deaths on the circuit. Soon after, the FIA limited the teams to 300hp turbocharged four cylinders. You can do some reading on these cars by looking into Lancia Delta S4 cars.

If it has anything to do with Thomas Knight, stay as far away from it as you can. I would just use the search and see what happens to threads debating the worth of electric superchargers here. We don't take too kindly to the "turvo" around here.
There are pros and cons to using either. I'd say the biggest pro to turbocharging a four banger is that it's widely done and much easier to come by parts. Supercharging an I4 is tricky and not many people bother trying. Therefore, it will be fairly expensive, imo, to try it out. Lots of fabricating.

Volkswagen is actually producing a turbo and supercharged engine at the moment. It was in Car and Driver not to long ago. It is a 1.4L that is said to produce 168HP and they said it is supposed to be more fuel efficient then a standard turbocharged engine. I just thought I would add that.

Supercharger vs Turbocharger has been discussed a million times- and not only on this site for that matter. Using both at the same time has also been discussed.
Those electric superchargers that they sell on ebay will not do shit except for maybe hurt your engine. There not even made for cars, they are made for pools i think. They do actually make a REAL electric turbocharger(that you wont see on ebay) but its not worth the time and money to get it running right. It would take way to much power to get it pushing any decent amounts of boost.

You know this already, but this has been discussed at length (mostly in the turbo forum). I know I've given some detailed responses to this question over the years. Be careful with the search criteria and you will find plenty to read on the subject. And most everyone will have a different opinion on this.

The blower im refering to is the one that sucks out the air from inboard motors after they shut off so the engine fumes don't ignite. That is the motor those guys use to make the 'electric supercharger'.
