#9121, "Power Steering pump noise / pulley"

My power steering pump makes some wierd screeching sounds at low rpm when I turn the wheel (such as parking lots). I know it is not the belt sqeaking, this is an entirely different sound. It almost sounds as if the power steering system is breathing really loud after smoking too many marlboros. Has any one else had this sort of problem, and what should I check or replace? Does the P/S pump system require some maintainence besides changing the fluid?

Also, I already have an AFX Pulley on the car and am wondering if I can put a smaller pulley on the power steering system. All of my friends cars have a tighter steering feel than mine and I am wondering if I slow down the P/S pump more, will my steering get tighter? I am comparing to a 91 Celica GT, 92 Nissan Stanza, and a 95 BMW 325i. Does anybody make a pulley set for our accessories or can I use one from another vehicle?

I agree with Chris. I use to drive a Bronco and it had a leak in the power steering pump, made a shit load of noise when it was low. I filled it up and the noise went away untill the level got too low again.

How tight do you really want your steering? If you want it super tight just take out the belt all together. That pump only runs the AC and Power Steering so nothing will get damaged without having those on. You will get rid of that noise for good if you did that. Feels good when your at full speed but when your in a parking lot it's a fuckin bitch to trun.

The resevoir is completely full. I have even tried going past the max level on the dip stick under the cap. I have broken my power steering belt before, it is a bitch to steer the car. I just want to slow it down so it is a little tighter.

Thanks for the replies.
