im sure that anybody who has changed a timing belt on one of these cars knows that the timing mark on the crankshaft is difficult to line up because the two marks are so far apart. I just put on a timing belt and the marks on the cam sprockets are lined up perfect but the mark on the crank is fudged just a little bit. when i say "a little bit" im talking about fractions of a tooth. it is so close i just wanna say screw it and throw the engine back in the car and see what happens but at the same time im wondering if maybe i should take it off and try again. seriously its only like 1/8 of a tooth off. i would really like to call it done because this is a 2 person job and nobody is around to help! what do you guys think? can i leave it the way it is?

when i rebuilt my motor last year, my aem gears line up perfect and my timing mark on the crank was just like you are describing, so i said fuck it and i started driving on it and i have yet to have problems.

If its 1/8 of a tooth off, I bet you'll never get it closer. There is no method to adjust the belt by less than 1 tooth. The belt is divided into whole numbers of teeth. So is the crank sprocket and cam sprockets. If its less than 1/2 tooth, you're good. I've probably done 5 timing belt jobs and they have all been off by a little bit (like 1/4 tooth). I probably tried each belt job 5 times before deciding it was OK.
