#90549, "EGR removal and nocking??"

My mechanic was telling me today that if I remove my egr, my engine will start nocking? What have you guys experienced from this? Is this true or not?

I also had a problem with my car nocking/misfiring around 3k rpms in most of the lower gears when accelerating about 35-40% or more. I switched to 89 octane (not the greatest with turbo) instead of 92 octane and it went away. I've been going back and fourth from 89 to 92 and haven't noticed the nock anymore.

Input??

I wouldn't worry too much about knocking at anyplace other than WOT. In open loop, your ECU should be able to compensate, anyways.

EGR doesn't work at WOT, either, so don't worry about EGR causing WOT tuning problems.

Well, I removed my EGR system completely and my engine will knock down low (<2000rpm) under load, but I think it's because I'm running 10.5:1 compression with that damn AFX ECU and the 91 octane knock juice. emoji

I just wanted to clarify that this (this time) isnt a dig on driggs, but a general comment on what mrslick most likely did. Its not driggs fault (i hope) that after mrslick spent all the money sent to him for squirts that I happened to send him mine for updating, then driggs magically gets the squirt he paid for. Clarification.

Great. This topic is about EGR systems. I'm getting sick of seeing MrSlick MS drama trickle into threads all over the board. Please stay on topic.

seems to me like removal of the EGR system would cause less knock. Lower to intake temps less chance of pre-ignition...right? emoji

The removal of the EGR system has such minimal affects on performance or engine operation (BANME!) that I dont think it could cause knock at idle or at WOT.

Can't even cause any problems at WOT cuz it's only open at idle.

right...I'm just saying...it seems like it would have more of potential to cause knock in place, rather than removed. In other words I don't see how removing an EGR system would cause knock...like what was claimed by the mechanic in the orginal post.

Then you need to read up on what the EGR system does! emoji

The EGR sends uncombustable air back into the combustion chambers to decrease the combustion chamber temperatures. By doing so, it reduces NOx emissions. As far as I am concerned, though, fuck NOx

OIC...I was just thinking in terms of hot exhaust gas entering the chamber...thus rising the temps. I was under the assumption that the EGR system was strickly an emisions system. Obviously I didn't think that the gases were uncombustable and such...that makes sence though..thanx for setting me straight. emoji

Alright, MR. EGR is going bye-bye and i'm cleaning out my intake manifold too.

Any of you guys get oily build-up in your manifolds? I noticed some when I cleaned my throttle body. Looked like it was in my mani too.

Anyone NOT get oily build-up in their intake manifolds?!?

The oil doesn't come from the EGR though, to fix that you'd need a catch can or a vacuum pump.

yeah I know it's not from the EGR. Do you have suggestions as to where a good place to get a catch can is. PM me or send a link so I can check it out. It's on my list of things to take care of.
It's amazing how long that list is getting now!

there's several posts about catch cans, the subject flared up and got real popular for a week or so, now it's smoldering again. Basically you just want to put it in-line to the PCV valve.
