I need help figuring out this problem. My 97 Rs is sputtering cutting off and is not getting gas when i try to start it. While driving it bucks, hesitates, accerates really slow. I took it to a mechanic and he says he cleaned out my throttle body and put a new fuel filter on the car. When i went to pick the car up it turned over back fired and shutoff. Now it backfires all the time while driving. I called this guy back and asked him what the deal was and he said the fuel filter was clogged on top and the fuel pump was going bad and the windings from the fuel pump is what is clogging the fuel system up. Does this seem like a logical explanation? I used the search and couldnt find anything related. I forgot to to add that i replaced:

ECT
O2 sensor
Fuel filter
Spark pulgs
coil
thermostat

Is the car throwing any check engine lights when it's sputtering around?

I guess you could just replace the filter real quick and make sure you're getting good pressure at the rail. Go from there.

First off the mechanic is a douche if all you had to do is call him and he told you "yea there was a problem with your fuel pump causing this but I didn't tell you about it while I was working on it" granted most mechanics just do whats asked, which is what it sounds like you did "hey fix my studdering/idle" If he let it leave the shop knowing that it would continue to happen rather then tell you and fix it then I would seriously go else where or pick up a walbro and do it yourself for $95.

I don't think that what he said is even possible, I could be wrong on this for real, I just never heard of that happening ever on an intank fuel pump, ever. And I have replaced alot of them mostly ford bronco2's/and camaros and other craptactular intank models and I never ran across windings of any kind in the filter. Then again I never split a canister filter open to check inside, I highly doubt your mechanic trubleshot in advance though to do that either as he let the car go out of the shop with out telling you about his findings.

Also how did he clean the TB? maybe he left his carb cleaner routine loaded up in your intake and washed all the carbon into the head, I doubt this guy took it off and if he did check to see if he put it on right and everythings hooked up again. He might of fouled your plugs out if he just washed all the carbon down with carb cleaner.

Cleaning the TB wont foul the plugs out. The mech is jumping to a conclusion that the clogged filter has caused the pump to fail. This happens very often but to jump on that horse isnt right until pressure is proven. Judging by his lack of explanation i dont think he checked it fully. If you didnt ask him to he wont (or wont check into the problem much) becasue then you can refuse to pay the checkout fees.

If you havent done a tune up in the past year or so, i would start there. check your fuel pressure as well make sure that is 48-50 psi.

Terry

I just got off the phone with this guy agian and he said that he did check the fuel pressure after he put the new fuel filter on and it was fine. he wants me to bring the car back so he can change the fuel pump. I knew i should have just done the work myself but my mom called this guy up because i was making slow progress on fixing the car.

All of the above. Did the work the mechanic have any effect on the car at all (good or bad)? How do you know you aren't getting gas when you try to start it? (it doesnt start at all now or what?) If it does start sometimes does it sometimes run normally? Did you replace the spark plugs before or after he "cleaned the tb?" Is your check engine light on? I'd say fuel filter from what you described, but you said he replaced it. Possibly electronic failure, either a critical sensor or ECU. Any more details?

Agreed do not take it back, if the pressure is fine then why change a good pump, foolish IMO.

Most of the time when i try to start the car the first time i turn the key it cranks but trun engine doesnt turn over. Ill wait a few seconds turn the key again and it will turn over run for a few seconds and then when i rev the engine it shuts off. Sometimes when i rev the engine the exhaust backfires and the car wil shut off. i did buy a scan tool and i havent gotten any codes. I also did a check to make sure all my sensors and ground were connected and i did notice some of the tape around the ecu wires was a little worn off but the wires looked to be ok. ill check agian in the morning
