i apologize in advance for the question but i've never changed a fuel pump and i wanted to swap mine out tomorrow, (i'm gonna start to put in some of the stuff before the turbo so there isn't as much down time) anyways can you change your pump w/ a full tank b/c i just filled up today? TIA i started to search but i figured someone could answer me before i find the answer however i will try findin it while waiting for a response from anyone

just a heads up, make sure you unscrew the gas cap to make sure that the fuel lines are depressurized. If you dont, the second you remove the lines, they will spray you in the face, and fuel+eyes=blindness. Take your time, and everything should come out fine.

Heres the instructions i wrote to go along with those pics. should help ya some. good luck
"The fuel pump is pretty strait forward install. first thing you need to do is remove the back seat. On the passanger side, there will be a little cover being held on by 4 screws. remove these screws and pull the cover off and push it to the side. you can try to unhook the wiring harness and remove the cover completely but i couldnt get it off. next remove the fuel lines attached to the pump cover. Have some towels incase you get some excess fuel spilling out. The hard line is not braized as some have said(atleast the fuel pump side isnt) and i just popped it loose with a wrench. remove the hard line and return line. there are 6 bolts that are 5/16(not metric for some reason) that hold the pump cover on. remove these, and the pump should pull right out. now, on the pump there is a screw on the brass bracket, remove this, and unplug the harness and unhook the hose(you will probably have to trim this hose shorter), and the pump should pull right out. put the new pump in, with the new filter, and look at the bracket. you will see that the new pump is longer and the bracket needs to be modified. just drill a new hole a little above the old one on the bracket and it should fit now. now do the reverse of taking it out and it should all go back into place fine, but dont reconnect the return line. we still have to install the FMU. i might have forgotten something small but its been a little while since i did it. i followed the vfaq for the GS-T and it was pretty close to ours. here are the pics of the fuel pump being taken out and apart"

Nearly full is ok, but I wouldn't change it on a 100% full tank. I once filled the tank until the nozzle clicked off and drove 1 mile back to the house to swap the fuel pump. When I pulled the fuel pump out, the tank overflowed and dumped gas everywhere. It dropped about a coke can worth on the ground. The car reeked of gas for a while.

some say they didnt have to, most say they had to. you can see in the pics that i had to.
the ones that you dont need to modify are the mini walbros sold by other vendors. they have a max of 255lph, but have more pressuredrop than a regular walbro 255lph. they tend to overwork themselves

So you have to modify the bracket for the Walbro HP model then? makes sense, thats what i have. i knew i would need the High pressure flow lol

thanks everyone b/c of this site, I having done nearly nothing mechanical on my car, was able to do this in about an hour which included finding all of the right tools and modifying the bracket (and having to retrieve something i dropped in the tank out of shear stupidity) I love this site, its nice to not have to pay somebody for doin somethin like this.
