#89771, "Got my pistons in, checking to see if the're forged"

Hey all,

I got the pistons a few minutes ago. I pulled the wrist pin out of one and placed the piston in my hand (with my hand open flat). I tapped the skirt of the piston softly with the wrist pin and it generated a kinda high pitch 'PIINNNG'. Is this the sound I'm looking for to see if it's forged vs cast? If I set the piston on my desk and tap it, it's just a short 'TINK' and doesn't cary it at ll.

They look like the stock replacements I have at home.

Any other tricks to telling the difference?

**EDIT**

They look like the OEM cast pistons. I'll get pics when I get home this evening.

It was something that Chris, Dino, and I were discussing in chat a few days ago. They're MAHLE, which make our OEM pistons. The guy I bought them from said they're forged. I didn't believe him and had him contact his machine shop. He told me they said they're forged.

His plans were to run 10psi daily, 15 at the track, and the machine shop recommended these.

I'm at work, so I can't get pics til I get home.

I believe that company makes a 'premium' piston that is forged. I would just call them (mahale) up. Give them your part number and see for sure. FYI, I have never seen a forged piston that was not super shiney.

Exactly, they look dull, like regular OEM pistons.

SOB!

Luke,
The 513110- series pistons are cast. You can verify this by the casting number on the inside of the piston. In this case, it should be an 87L34. The 'L' designates the type of casting is it. If it were a forged piston (which are not available for this application), the number inside would be an 87P34.

Looks like someone is owed a refund. And someone else is owed a severe beating with said "forged" piston. He flat out lied to you... twice. Fuck him up, Luke.

a really easy way to see forged v cast:
on the underside of the piston, cast will have a rougher, grainier appearance, while forged is always smooth.

Okay, supposedly he talked to his machine ship and this is what he sent me:

Well i contacted the machine shop and they say since it's been a while since i ordered them they dont have access to the record since it's been over a year........and on top of that they have hired new ppl and the old machinists arent there anymore i think it was a change in ownership or something. They say that they wont come good for it because they didnt order it the other people did. So I have no idea what to do from this point.

I don't like to give people the shaft (especially when he's getting it from both ends), but what am I to do? I could

a) send the pistons back to him and have him refund my money, let him deal with it.

b) have him refund part of my money and keep them

c) file it with paypal and have them refund my money (if he refuses option a or b)

I had a feeling this would happen, so it didn't bug me when I got them.

A
unless you actually want to keep them, but it doesnt sound like it will do you any good. And C wont do you any good since the transaction was completed and complies with Paypals regulations.

Anytime a vendor gives you bad information, for whatever reason, you are entitled to your money back if you are sharp enough to discover the truth. You have no idea if he is lying about what the machine shop said or not, and I know you are a good guy, so I hope you protect yourself, return the POS pistons and get what you really want.

Good luck.

It's all good, he made it right. I believe he didn't know because he seemed genuinely interested in helping me when I told him they were cast pistons, and was very willing to work out the issue.
