#89249, "New oil pump and it's seal."

So I just got the 'ole car back together after a full rebuild and it looks like I may be leaking oil out of the front main seal. The Melling oil pump comes with a seal on it already right?? I installed the pump on the crank to the block with the seal already in the oil pump. I didn't lube the crank with any oil when I put the oil pump on. I did use the anerobic sealant on the oil pump to block seal. I'm not sure if it's the front main or the O ring that's on the oil pump to block. Any ideas on how to pinpoint where it's coming from? I have the timing belt back off, so what should I do?? Replace the front main and the O ring? TIA.

You dont need to lube the crank when installing it, just make sure it's clean. You DO need to remove the little metal key for the crankshaft sprocket, otherwise you'll damage the front main seal. Throw a new one in there first, see if that fixes it.

Also there's 2 different pink o-rings in the rebuild kit that will fit in the oilpump-block hole. The one for the bedplate is too thick and could cause the oilpump to seat wrong and not seal completely.

If you end up removing the oilpump, inspect it carefully to see if theres any oil getting past the anaerobic, or you missed a spot somewhere.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who had all kinds of trouble after rebuilding ... I got a 1000 miles out of my block before I had to pull the whole motor back out. emoji

yeah, I'm starting to feel that way now too. ^^ I'm one hell of a timing belt changer now though, I can change a timing belt so freakin fast now, and I used to think that was a hard thing to do. emoji Oh how things change.
