#89129, "Details about rebuilding short block."

Sup guys.
I talked to two of the garage/machine shop already.
And I want to see what I have to get done to the BLOCK to get the BEST engine rebuild?

I got the howell long rod bottom end kit.

The job that the auto shop/machine shop should do to the block includes:
-parts cleaning
-block shot peened
-all bolt holes tapped
-decking the block
-bore and hone .020
-brass freeze plugs
-crankshaft polished and checked
-assemble bottom end

What else do I have to look for?
Thanks.

One of the shop quote me $750 for the above work. you guys think is good?

Nashville, I got our machine guy to do it for me, I work for a dealership. Pretty much all that except for the bolt holes, but you could do that.

I guess it's not bad, but I only paid $500 for the following:

hot tank (clean)
bore/hone
deck
balance pistons/rods/crank
assembly (includes gapping rings and spec'ing out bearings)
new freeze plugs (no longer press in - tapped for threaded pipe fittings)

I think you need to do some shopping around. For $750, you should get a balance, fresh coat of paint and a blow job from the mechanic's wife imo. emoji

Clarifying. Oil galley freeze plugs. Not the coolant freeze plugs.

That's the thing too.
I did a rebuild before (2 years ago)
and I got a machine shop to do it for $600 but it supplied rings, rod bearing, main bearing, resurface crank journals, but no boring or balancing I think.

So.... any other input?

i paid like 160 bucks for hot tank, bore + hone. then built it myself. like like money in my own pocket, and not in theirs.

Pretty sure he did the same thing with the freeze plugs, bro, but you may be right. Not like we're talking about turbo GMCs... emoji
