So I just got my car all finished the other day and it started right up. I did a complete rebuild from top to bottom. Well, I was letting it idle and sounded fine and was looking for leaks of any kind and I found one. Coolant was leaking all over the floor, so I shut it off to fix it. I traced it to the water pump. The pump is brand new from PartsDinosaur.com and was torqued just like it says in the book. I know I put the gasket on it right and didn't get misaligned, so I am just stumped as to why it started leaking like it did. I have already taken it off and am about to replace it with a new one from Napa, but just don't want to have to tear into things again. Anybody have any idea why it would just leak?? Could the pump have been bad or something? Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Sometimes that fat o-ring on the water tube gets pinched and doesn't make a good seal. It's a bitch to get it in right. And you may not have seen it because it could have been pinched in the back.

The O ring on the water tube? I installed that and checked it out and the O ring went in perfectly, no water was coming out of the tube, it was leaking from the water pump on the edges of where the water pump meets the block. Any other ideas?

I had a leak when I did a rebuild in the same place. Ended up being a crappy thermostat gasket and it was leaking down the block and dripping from the water pump.

well, already replaced the water pump, drilled a hole in the wheel well for the troublesome bottom motor mount bolt while I was at it too, (so much easier now) I'm checking to see if it leaks later today, hopefully it was just the water pump or gasket. Thanks for the advice though, I'll look for all of that too. I just love taking all that shit off my car right after I get it all back together could have been worse I guess.

Hey wow, your the first person I've read that drilled a hole in the fender for that PITA engine mount. That would certainly make things a lot easier ... what size hole did you drill?

I KNOW I made sure the gaskget was on there correctly...

Also to fix it did you have to actually remove the entire pump or were you able to loose it and then retorque it down or what?

I do NOT want to have to pull my damn timing belt again... I have no cover so I can at least get to it. I wish they didn't put the timing belt tensioner BEHIND the freakin pulley that was the worst move ever...

I bought a water pump from Carquest and works like a charm. It's the Partsdinosaur pump, it's a bogus pump. Get a new one from a parts store. And yes, it does suck, but you will have to take your timing belt off once again.
