Tapping... sounds like it's coming from under the valve cover, it's coming from the left side near the first spark plug. What could it be? I just installed new vacuum hoses, wire loom, and today I replaced the thermostat gasket. I haven't drove it for a couple of days but I've never heard this before.

I don't know much about internal parts, but I was wondering that too... what could be wrong with the lifters to make them tap? Oil gets changed every 3000 miles and checked every other day, it's never been low and isn't now.

yeah, does the car stutter when the tap comes up? Like it loses power? If so, it's probably a loose plug or wire, maybe a bad one somewhere.

Mine was tapping and the mechanic thought it was lifters, turns out our engines echo a lot and the rod was knock and yes I did also throw a rod through the block.

I haven't had any power loss. The spark plugs are in tight, full of oil, no head gasket leak. I didn't notice it until today and I'm usually in the engine bay with the car running every day, so I would've noticed it before. I'm thinking it's a lifter but I guess I'll be taking it to satan on Friday cause I'm getting my custom 2.5" cat-back installed tomorrow! Is this tapping, assuming it's a lifter, something that Mitsubishi will cover under the 60,000 mile powertrain warranty?

If they do cover it, get them to put on the new upgraded lifters and rockers. I can find the P/N if you want it.

I don't think I'm the only one who may think this, but it sounds like a spun bearing to me. I had that same sound coming from mine, and it turned out to be a rod bearing. Now, my car has been down for about 2 months and is awaiting its rebuild. I'm having trouble finding a shop to take it to. Well, thats my opinion, good luck whatever it is!!

That was the other thing I thought it could possibly be. The oil has always been changed right at the 3,000 mile mark and it never gets low. Hopefully I will find out tomorrow when I take it to satan.

It's not real loud. I can't really hear it with the hood closed, but when I open it I can here it. If I put my ear up close (hoping not to catch my shirt in a fan or pulley) I can hear the tapping coming from right under the valve cover only near the very left spark plug area. Not even near the second one, but the first one... weather the engine is warm or cold. It sounds like it's coming from a lifter, not like it's echoing from anywhere else. Well, I'm off to work... hope I don't throw a rod on the way there!!!

Kind of sound slike a liftewr to me... but that usually goes away after it warms up. Does it stop ticking at higher rpm... then I'd think bearing. Run the engine on a couple of jack stands and listen form beneath and see if you hear anything down there. If not only for the top probably lifter... good luck, and keep us updated.

Actually when my bearing went there was no noise until 3500 or so and then it got louder as the revs increased. I couldn't drive above 4000 rpm.

It could also be an exhaust leak. My exhaust leak sounded scarily like a rod tapping sound!

Other things... if it's a clicking noise, it could be the injectors.

I got it too, but guess what it was (mine anyway but something you should check)the timing belt cover, for some reason out of the blue mine started to hit and make a tapping sound, went away
after wiggling it around though. Anyway could be any of the above just thought this might be something easy to check emoji
