I hoped my first thread on 2gnt to be not as depressing, but I need your help now. All at a sudden my engine started knocking since December. With my last engine without any mod, I did not notice oil leakage and I ran it dry. The crankshaft and piston rods were damaged. In result, I bought and mounted this engine about a year ago. I was told that it had about 70k miles on it at that time. It was possible that engine lube might have leaked again, so I checked and it was at above normal. I did some search and found someone had his engine knocking because of a bent rod in one of the cylinder. But it still has pretty much power and runs good. It bothers me pretty much constantly though. When I rev and let it go, it knocks severely while it comes back to idle. On highway at around 3000 rpm it constantly knocks, but still has much horsepower. I have no idea of such happening. For help tracking possibilities, I have Injen short ram intake, Pacesetter header and down pipe, Greddy exhaust, Denso Iridium spark plugs, Magnecor 8.5mm spark plug wires and Unorthodox underdrive crank pulley installed. Everything else is stocker except that thermostat that was mounted on the cylinder block has been removed. While installing the header, my mechanic was too tired to grind part of it out so just got rid of the thermostat. I do sometimes revv high at launches but not occassionally. I don't know if it's the problem of breaking down though because I don't usually hit the red line. Please help come up with some idea for fixing/repairing. I hope overhaulling or just getting a new block is not the only solution. Thanks for everyone in advance.

And your only options are what you said as well, overhauling or replacing.
**EDIT** It may only have a spun bearing and not a bent rod, either way you'll need to rebuild the motor or replace it. Since you've been driving with it like this I'm sure it scarred the crank shaft.

I was wondering the same myself. What do you mean by eliminating the thermostat? If the header was gonna hit anything it would be the thermostat housing in which the thermostat is located. Did your "mecahnic" remove the thermostat housing? I surley hope not. Besides removing the housing and rigging up something to replace it would be more work than making the header fit.

Thanks for all of your comments. I'll probably get a motor with 70k mi. The guy said it's off of his customer's car who wanted to swap to a turbo motor and it runs good without any defect or visible leaks. *Well I don't remember what exactly original thermostat housing looks like. But I am sure he did some mod or removing some part of it, b/c there was actually some space left between the header mount and the piping that coolant flows into the engine. I thought it would not be able to fit the header onto it w/o grinding the edge of it, but I don't see any sign of it. Earlier while I had no idea about it, he just told me he got rid of the thermostat and let it flow all the time regardless of the engine temperature. The result? I had a COLD winter. I assume that it kept the engine cooler than usual. Also if the outside temperature is below 40 degrees, the temperature in the engine room wouldn't go up unless I stopped moving. Driving on a highway was KILLING. I want to know what exactly happened to my thermostat housing and all the "heat" from the engine room. What u guys think?

Check the torque converter bolts/flexplate bolts before you scrap the motor. I've seen more then one motor sent to the scrap yard because of that. If they loosen up they will knock like hell.
