#87269, "High EGT's while cruising"

Here I am driving the G/f back to texas and while cruising at 80mph 3500rpm's my EGT's are 1400. while cruising at 80 for hours it affects my engine temp obviously. No idea why. I have my scanner so i can check my fuel trims to see where i am at. Didnt bring my fuel pressure gauge and cant find a parts store that has one to thread into my reg. I went and picked up a cooler set of ngk spark plugs. the plugs that were in the car look good, tan tips on the electrode. I fail to believe the coolant sensor and EGT probe are bad at the same time.

I am limited on what tools i have so any idea would be great.

I have a 1:1 aero Reg with the 12:1Fmu setup for fuel.....had to go this route to drive the car while MS is on the way.

as he stated^..

But what makes you think that 1400 is high?

If I rem. correctly our stock motors have a cruising egt of ~1500. Id say your golden. If you regular temps where a little high, you prob getting massive heat soak to the rad. Maybe invest in some thermal wrap and an oil cooler. But those egts look fine.

Trims were lean. ecu was +13 on both trims while daily driving. uped the pressure by 1/2 turn and i am zero'd out. We'll see how it does on the way to dinner. At WOT i am creeping up to 1600 by appx 4000. I cant hold a long pull out because i dont feel like melting shit this far from home. I cant say i took reading on a stock n/a motor but 1500 is really high. I agree with heat soak but i have everything ceramic coated, i never had any probs with my 96 talon when all the parts were on that car so something is deffinitly off here.

If i recall i set the fuel pressure at 50lbs a month back...there is no reason to be lean here.......i am worried the reg is crapping out. It chatters like crazy which it always did when i got it from another member then it quiets up and is intermittant.

I cant believe i brought my scanner but no fuel pressure tester....never fully prepared. not to mention i am buying tools at napa that i have at home...what a waste. Learning lesson i guess.

Here is my route: 35n from college station to 44n to OK city. 69n to 40 tulsa. 40 to st louis to 55n. Anyone live along the way?

yea try and get those trims as close to 0 as you can. you have an a/f gauge or a turbo timer you can see the voltage with when cruising? things like that have anyways helped me in the fuel department. sounds like you may have been just slightly lean but the ecu had your back.

I will hit 1600 when partial throttle and up hill. 75-80 MPH I am usually around 1350-1400. Pretty normal for me.

1400 is perfectly normal for 70-80 mph..I found out also, when I did the EGR block off, my EGT's went down at cruising by 30-50 degrees.

This is about what my car runs too. My egts will get to 1600 or even a little more if I let it. This happens while driving in vacumm. Under full throttle the egts will drop to 1400 and stay there. I also wonder if where the temp probe is would make it read higher than if it was in the #4 exhaust runner.

I pull and check the spark plugs about every 500 miles and they look perfect and the compression has gotten better also (180 psi across). I have tried running higher fuel pressure and larger injectors, but there was not much change at all in the egts at cruising speeds.

Does anyone know what egt a N/A engine would run at cruising speeds?

Here is a picture of where my temp probe is:

Well straightening out the trims appears to have solved my issues, wont know till tomarro won the way home since there was a lovely hail storm in southern texas.....(quarter size hail)

Egts are lower and low end has improved. Now before when under full throttle my EGT's dont drop they continue to climb. Runner 1 will be the hottest. i pulled the plugs and plugs went from nice and tan to closer to white from runner 4 to runner 1. leanness on runner 1 is obvious but some people still claim #4 is. When i get closer to home late tomarrow night i will try and get a few 5th gear pulls to 6000 rpms. I think i am going to order another fuel reg from summit just in case and see what fuel pressure i am at.

I lost to WRX today because of that shit. To top it off, it shouldn't have climbed that fast since I was only boosting 11psi.

thats not completely true and an invalid statement in my opinion. every car is different.

for the record, before my 3:55 tranny, i was at around 1450 egt cruising at 80mph.. if i would stop on the gas at all around 80mph, the egt would go cooler because of fuel.

1400 to 1500 egt is normal.

now with the 3:55 tranny. i sit at about 1300 at 80mph

Well once i zero'd my trims out i am at 1300 cruising 80mph. if accellerating to maintain 80mph like going up hill i am at 1400. When boosting i sit around 1500. I still havent checked what pressure i am at and really dont care since my short trims are 0 or -1. I am going to agree with turby on this, 1590 is documented as a melting degree for boosted applications. But to each his own!

My coolant temps are more than likely heatsoak but not as bad as they were when i was lean plus i think i might have a bad sensor, gets hot way too quick.

you have a howell 160 in? throw in some water wetter and run like 60/40 water to coolant, and make sure its full. thats what i do and my coolant temps just chill.
