#87202, "Southbend clutch: Info/specs on my new clutch set-up"

First off, a huge thanx to Andy at Southbend clutch for educating me in the ways of the clutch force!!! He has been VERY helpful and patient with my and some of my more assinine questions.

okay, some of you wanted to know about this new set-up so here is what i got from Andy:

-Sachs VR6 pressure plate treated for a plate load of 1800lbs
-Sachs 228mm (stock is 225mm) with Organic on one side and Ferramic lineing on the other.
-set-up "rated" for 422 ft/lbs torque
-as close to a stock feel as you can get from an aftermarket clutch, with all the benefits of high end performance clutch.
-Unorthodox aluminum flywheel with Ferritic Nitrocarburized Insert

i found out that just because the other companies claim higher plate loads of 2100, 2600 etc. does not nesessarily mean its a better cluth than one with a lower plate load. they use lower grade materials in the clutch disc that create more heat: more heat=less torque. So, when higher grade materials are used in the linings that decrease the amount of heat being generated, you get more torque in the end. So basicly you can have a lower plate load with higher grade materials in the linings and still have the same or more torque rating over all and still maintian that "stock" feeling.

i will post pics of everything laer toay when UPS shows up.

Told you Andy and Southbend is what this community needs. You will find his clutch products, for the price, will not be beaten by anyone. If you can find a great complete aftermarket clutch setup for 400 price range anywhere else, something is not right with it. Southbend has been around fellas, and they know more than the other guys.

Excellent, just what i was looking for..One question though, I thought this clutch was rated at like 650 ftlbs of torque? Or can they change the disk lining material for higher torque capacity? And yes, what is the PRICE for this setup? The only thing that really sucks about a non modular clutch setup on our cars, is getting the damn trans back up to the block..

There are many different clutch kit options for the 420a. You guys have used modular kits with OFE and F combinations, Non-modular kits with OFE/race style disc coupled with VR6 cover, solid feramic disc with race engineered cover and Sachs power kits with L/W flywheels.

So far everybody seems to be happy. This tells me that there is no one clutch that works for everyone. The best course to follow is to call and disscuss what it is that you expect from your clutch. And to share your own experiance with the rest of the group.

In my opinion, this is one of the best forums on the net!!

I just ordered my second clutch from SBC today. Andy is a great guy! Thanks for taking the time to answer all of my questions.
I am happy we have a manufacturer that will work us to custom build a product to meet our needs.
