#87015, "Headgasket probs?"

I was changing my oil today, and it looked dirty, not too bad, so I didn't pay much attention to it. I have been losing some, so I assumed since I am 97 that it's just the bolts that need to be shaved. My real problem came when I checked my coolant, it was reddish in color, and I am assuming it's oil. I know not all of the oil is going in to the coolant because I'll have small patches of oil on the pavement when I park, but at least some of it is getting in there. How SERIOUS is this. I am assuming (I am assuming a lot right now) that this is the head gasket, but how quick does this need to be changed? Are there any special tools required to do a head gasket? And finally, do auto parts places such as NAPA or Auto Zone sell MLS head gaskets for our cars?
Thanks!

Shaving bolts? WTF? Anyway, probably headgasket. Do compression check. When you assume you make an ass out of you and me (assume = ass+u+me see?). Define serious. Define special tool. Torque wrench? Yes but there are many other choices (probably better). Do a search for headgasket, then make your decision. www.store.partsdinosaur.com is a good alternative to napa etc. Don't forget to do the headbolts. They should not be reused. Your welcome.

I DID do a search, that's why I am assuming. By serious, I mean is my car going to blow up if I don't get this done in the next couple of days? By special tool I mean anything other than what your average DIY wrencher has. And as far as shaving the bolts, I mean shaving a couple of threads off the rear head bolts because the holes aren't deep enough. Do a search yourself.

Well, ya try to be nice...As you commanded I did do a search but I still did not come up with a fuckin' brain for you! Maybe if you shaved the hair off your balls THAT would fix your problem! Because that makes about as much sense as your shaving the rear head bolts comment. What did you do mill 1/2 inch off your head? As for your special tools in your special ed class.....oops....... sorry, I don't usually get that way....... Anyway, when I said search and then referenced partsdinosaur, I was telling you to search for the choices of headgaskets and the reasons that you would get one over the other. Now as for your car blowing up, depending on how far gone the gasket is your engine may crap out and not start but it will probably not blow up. But be aware that it is not good for the rest of your engine. As for DIY and special tools; what some would consider a regular tool, others would not. So it is hard to gauge. Most would consider a compression gauge a "regular" tool, while others would rather assume and consider that a special tool. So you can see how that is a bit vague.

Hahahahaha...Look at me now, all high and mighty! Hahahaha....I don't know why I went off on that tangent, I don't usually do that. I like sublety. I think what set me off was the guys that constantly look for other fixes to their problems (not that you are doing that oMInOUs97RS - wow you got a cap lock problem?). I have seen guys shave head studs because they did not want to believe their headgaskets are gone. I've seen them put in washers, try to re-tap heads, try to shave and reuse TTY studs (bad, bad) etc... I guess I've dealt with the excuses too long and gotten grumpy emoji . No, I was not aware of the Mitsu problem of that stud. That's why I asked, WTF? but got no answer. Haven't worked with them long enough to know ALL the particulars but I do know that these have heads that are shaved down .030 and still have no stud problem (I have one right now) and that was the info I was going by.

oMInOUs97RS, please ignore the first part of my second post and accept my mea culpa (gotta get to them anger management classes)}(

As for djtrickee, nah, no way I'm walking away with my tail between my legs. ya can't do that with a foot in your mout emoji

Don't start crawling up people's asses about stuff until you know what's up, which you don't, so crawl back in your newbie whole and STFU

lol your car won't blow up at all. I'm 97 also and I have this problem right now. All that will happen is leak a lil oil down the back of the block, the car will overheat if driven long enough in traffic (turn on AC full blast, the fans will come on full power emoji ), and usuallly when my car starts to overheat in traffic it will start smoking like crazy emoji emoji . Stupid fuckin Chrysler made the holes to shallow and then the head don't seal properly. If you do take off your top end i would get a good quality head gasket, arp head studs (already correct length), and you prob won't need to many special tools other than a torque wrench assuming that you have basic hand tools. Also my car runs good and compression check was 160psi on all cylinders.

Yes you should shave a couple threads off the rear bolts, specifically drivers side behind cylinder #4.

I don't think your problem will be the HG, although make sure you put it on right!! There are a number of people who put it on backwards and wonder why oil and coolant are mixing. If I remember right, people use an MLS gasket with a light coating of copper spray.

The hardest part I think will be the timing belt and the crank pulley. My buddy broke 3 conventional pullers with that thing. I think there's a specific one for the car from Chrysler, but I could be wrong.

Good luck!
