I dont know why but when im crusing at above 60mph, the RPMS seem to skyrocket to like 3000. The engine noise gets really loud at that speed too. I just put in new plugs, changed the oil, and did a tune-up. My old 95 Galant, with basically the same amount of horses (2.4L 144hp I4) usually was about 100 to 200 rpm lower at the same speed. Now maybe Im wrong but if the horsepower is basically the same but the eclipse should weigh a LOT less than the Galant, shouldnt I be driving at lower RPMs? Anyone have any clue of what would be wrong? Belts? Engine? Intake? Exhaust???????????? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If I am going 60mph I am either at 7000 rpm in 2nd gear or about 5 seconds from 90mph at 7000rpm in 3rd gear.

The RPM's that the engine is turning has nothing to do with the weight of the car, but rather the gearing of the transmission. So your galant may be a few hundred rpm lower but that is due to its different gearing.

I'm not really sure what you are asking here? Is your question about gearing? and what speed the engine is at a certain mph? If so that is just how the car is geared? Or do you have an auto and the rpms jump around while cruising at a constant speed?

What im saying is that let say top gear cruising (5th gear) at or around 60 miles an hour. 5th gear im getting about 3000 RPM. The galant i had before (4 SPD AUTO) in top gear was getting about 2800. Its a heavier car with same horsepower, and I dont think the final gear of the galant would be wider than the 5th in the eclipse. Is this normal that my car is driving at those RPMs? Im not saying like racing at max speed (yes, I can do 65 in 2nd too emoji) but just normal driving.

Heres basically my normal driving:

1st = 0-15 @ ~2500
2nd = 16-30 @ ~2500
3rd = 31-40 @ ~2500
4th = 41-55 @ ~2500
5th = 56 - ?

I know you guys had your eclipses a LOT longer than I have, so could you help me out and tell me if these RPM's match the speed on your cars? (at 30mph do you do approx 2500rpm too? etc. etc.). I just wanna make sure my engine is running normally. Hopefully this gets rid of the confusion. Thanks guys!

Also, does anyone live in Rockland County, NY?

How many miles are on your currently clutch? Almost sounds like you have a slipping clutch. 3000RPM in top gear should be 68MPH.

Easy way to find out. Find a hill get up to about 55MPH in top gear and gun it. If the RPMs shoot up and the MPH doesn't, you have a slipping clutch.

Well the car itself has ~49000 miles. I dont know if the clutch was ever changed because I did not originally buy this car. But the clutch is very tight and the shifting is stiff, so I believe the clutch was either changed or someone took good care of it. I tried that up-the-hill test and basically flooring it in 5th accomplished nothing than pushing the pedal to the floor. The car really didnt gain much speed and the RPMs stayed basically the same.

I rescently changed the plugs from the factory ones to Bosch Platinum +4 Plugs. The dealership also said that the engine belts (not the timing belt) was worn and rotted/cracked. Could this be the cause? Thanks.

Yeah i do about 3 grand at 70 mph too man. 60 seems kinda slow for the rpm range you are at, but maybe it is normal for a slight diff??
