#86129, "I really need some help here guys"

hey guys, sorry i havent been on the forum in awhile, i have been working alot lately, and have had a whole bunch of problems with the eclipse as of late. well heres the deal.

The car overheated on me about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Luckly i stopped it as soon as it over heated. I had to have it towed to my house cause i was out of town. i got home and was sick so i couldnt do anything to fix it. i took off the thermostat and drained all the coolant out of the car and totally redid it. I put in a new thermostat and new coolant thoughout everything. The car runs really good now not overheating or anything, so yay for me, one problem solved.

Now I am leaking oil like a son of a bitch. I cant figure it out, and dont know where to start. I lose about 2 to 3 quarts of oil in about a 2 to 3 month span. What the hell could be causing this?? I was totally thinking about parking the eclipse and getting a newer truck, but my wife wont let me. I dont know what the hell to do. The tranny needs new syncro's cause it wont stay in 4th or 5th gear plus the speedo wont work. I dont know what to do anymore with anything. I have to have reliable transportation but I cant afford to get the car fixed. It is going to cost way too much money to do anything with it. and since I have fucked it all up, no one will take it in for a good trade so i have in fact fucked myself. Yes i know it is my fault, but what the hell can i do? my wife promised me when we got our tax return, my car would get fixed. She gets into a accident and she had to pay out 500 bucks to get it out of the shop (deductible) so now we dont have that much money left and again I am the one left out in the cold as always. I dont know what to do.

well...

are you just burning the oil or are you actually leaking the oil?
if your leaking it, wheres it dripping/leaking from?
could be your rear main seal maybe, im just throwing out some idea's.

as for your tranny, i have some access to the 3.55 neon tranny's for like 3-400 bucks shipped from a yard.

I might be getting in touch with you in a little while about those transmissions. I just put another one in about 3 weeks ago, and the speedo quit working and it might be messed up again to say the least. Does putting the neon tranny in require any modification?? Thanks for any info!

Are you seeing oil on the ground or is it just missing? Does your car smoke?

Speedo could be from faulty wiring leading up to the cluster, cluster connection, or the speed sensor on the transmission.

Synchros, you're going to have to replace emoji.

Well, the neon tranny doesn't bolt right up. You need our bell housing. After that it does, but I think you need the shift levers too. There's information on the FAQ page as to the gear ratios of the trannys so you can make an informed decision about what you want. There's a lot of posts about it too. I haven't done it, so I'm not talking from first hand experience. Sorry to hear about the oil leak, any idea where it's coming from? have you been able to trace it at all?

TJ,

If you're in Florida, you might check into getting some help from the FL2GNT crew. I know John (grain) is a smart MoFo when it comes to these cars and has done almost everything short of blowing one up on the highway and... oh. My bad, John. emoji Seriously, though. I'd be willing to bet John could help you get it all sorted out (just because I know he's a stand up guy, although I have to admit it's wierd suggesting someone else would help out like this).

Speedo not working is more than likely the sensor. Hopefully the sensor is just dead and not fallen apart in the tranny, possibly causing your synchro problem (is that even possible? I dunno.).

Your oil leak will require you get the brake parts cleaner and spray the back of the block off and then run the car to figure out where the leak is so you're not wasting money "fixing" leaks you don't have while leaks you DO have get missed. Track down your leak first, then worry about how much it costs to get it fixed. A head gasket is maybe $50. A rear main seal runs about $15. It's the labor that kills you. If you can ask for help doing specific repairs to your car, your chances of getting it are greatly improved, sir.

And remember why you painted your car up like that, sir. For the boy. Don't resent doing that. That would take the cool factor away and make it just another car. Get the Supamobile sealed up, in gear and back on the road soon, man.

(And don't forget to look for parts on here when you figure out what you need.)

Sounds like you have the same oil leak my eclipse and my mother's talon have. The back headbolt on the driver's side is where I have traced the leaks on these cars to. From what research I have done on here and the oil consumption you are describing I would bet that is where yours is leaking also.

SPeculating on a leak doesn't do much good until you go hunting for it. See what you come across and where the oil starts and go from here.

As far as your trans goes, don't over look a blown shifter bushing on the trans linkage not fully engaging the transmission in gear.

hey wuz up guys/ladies? i'm new here and i just wanna say wuz up to all my brotherens in the dsm world, lol! i have a 95' dsm eclipse 420a and i got mad respect for these engines! this is my 3rd but my 5th dsm model. ive had a dsm twin turbo cyclone imported from japan and an american gsx. nut i've had the most fun with this engine. i resently had to remove the heads (i thought they were blown due to usage of N.O.S.) and once i got the head off i notcied that the problem was my head gasket which was leting water into piston #3 making it rev crazy, stall, lose h.p.,and let white smoke and water drops out of my exhuast. emoji i feel so dumb for not looking at the signs but w/e on moday i get my heads back (still sent them to get rebuilt at JAPAUTO) and soon i'll be blowing those pesky civic's and annoying mustangs (5.0's not 5.4's cuz i can only keep up with them or pass them by a lil bit/ a lil advice never talk S**t if you can't win against them!). so if you have any of these syntoms in your car then don't worry, relax and just take a look. NOTE: IF YOU EVER REMOVE YOUR HEAD'S ALWAYS REPLACE THE HEAD GASKET!!!!!! TRUST ME YOU'LL THANK ME LATER! anyways i'm the team prez of LOST SOULS FAMILY MIAMI,FL. so if you guys have any problems or questions that i may help you in hit me up @ lostsoulsfamily@aol.com or at the shop 786-286-3460 i'll be glad to help any good person out there!

here i am trying to get help with a problem and it turns out to be some big bullshit. anyways, i got the S-10, and The eclipse is still sitting there. BTW Brian, I am going to have it professionally redone in the traditional superman colors. I wish i could have everything done by MOD day but I dont think it is going to happen =(. anyways, I have been told that the oil leak could be from the CAM sensor? could this be true? I have replaced the speed sensor and it still wont work, and the wires should be fine, i didnt touch or move any of them. I started her up the other day and she ran really rough. Dont know what it could be but hopefully I can find out soon. Thanks for all the help guys and not to the dumbass who had to put his first post in my post!

Guys,
It's not leaking from the head is it? I know there's a problem with the driver's side head bolts being too long (well, actually the bolt holes are too shallow). You take them out, lop off a few threads and put them back in (obviously generalized).

Where's the leak coming from?

I dunno, just throwing my hat into the ring.

I think that will be pretty cool, Supa. I would suggest using the Superman colors, but using them more in unison with the lines of the car. I tried to Photoshop something to show you, but I'm just too damn lazy to try anything that advanced today. emoji And why would you want it done before MOD'05? Don't you live way out in the SE corner of the country? You're going to go to MOD? Do tell!

I have been told that the oil leak could be from the CAM sensor? could this be true? I have replaced the speed sensor and it still wont work, and the wires should be fine, i didnt touch or move any of them.

The oil leak could be from anywhere, man. CAM sensor could be a culprit, but we really need to know where on the motor this oil is coming from before we can make a good guess at it. I would suggest you get a large piece of cardboard and slide it under the engine bay one night, then pull it out in the AM and try to determine which corner of the engine you're getting the most oil from. Of course, the cross member tends to catch a lot of it and confuse your "readings," but it's a start imo. While you're back there fiddling with the speed sensor (which I have no clue about, sorry), take a flashlight to that corner of the block and see if you're losing oil from the VC or HG seams. You might get some Brake-Cleen and spray as much of the block off as you can back there, take her for a spin around the block (if she's drivable), then getting back in there to reinspect things.

I started her up the other day and she ran really rough. Dont know what it could be but hopefully I can find out soon.

I think if either your cam or crank sensors fail on you, the engine will not run at all. So running rough could be due to the car sitting for extended periods of time. There's so many things that can cause a car to run "rough," it's hard to take a stab at that one. Plugs? Wires? Bad gas? Dirty fuel filter? Bad timing? See what I mean? I think that will require some more testing of different things to figure out.

Superman, ya gotta isolate the leak a little. Without a description of what area it's in, it's hard to help. This may be basic for you but I'll go through it anyway. When isolating leaks try to start from the highest part down. Look for ANY fresh oil leak from the top of your valve cover and work your way down. Once you find the fresh then do the detective thing and try to locate a probable spot that it would leak from. Now when around a pulley area know that the pulley may throw the oil around. This throwing does make a distinct pattern of lines out away from the center of the pulley. If your crank seal is leaking on the flywheel side (at that rate) then you would probably see oil dripping from the bottom of the bell housing at the joint of the engine. I would say that a quart a month (depending on use of course) is a pretty good leak (unless the engine is older and burning a lot). If you can't seem to find a spot then use carb and choke to clean off what you can and then try to look later. Oh yeah, and don't forget the cam seal that can leak down and look like the headgasket is leaking. This may have been said earlier in post but with the bullshit "old souls" or whatever the F he was, I don't feel like reading back through. Hope this helps.
