#85425, "97 rs won't start after 1 day, water bump spewing water"

My car I never drive. When I do want to, I have to jumpstart it everytime. There is 2 month old battery, new in it under that hood. Last weekend I had it just jump started and idling in the parking lot with the vent blowing reg air while I hopped inside...I come back out and the hood is smoking white smoke everywhere, and the water pump is spewing water/coolant all over the ground. The temperature guauge was all the way up to hot, and so I cranked the heater on and parked the car and haven't driven it since.

I replaced the power steering belt in October, but not the Accessory belt. Could this have something to do with the altenator not charging the battery, and the reason for the water pump spewing water? Is the pump dead now, you think?

Anyone help plz.

I would say dead water pump, and posibly dead alternator....if the belt is tight and all the connections are good.

i had...well not exactly the same thing happen. i pulled into my school parking lot after running down to the store. parked it, went back to class for a couple hours. came back out and there was coolant all over the ground. started it up...clack clack clatter bang. yup, water pump shelled. i recently changed mine...not too bad. and you do NOT have to remove the rear plastic peice. i didnt...mainly cuz i didnt wanna jack with removing the cam gears. but anyhow, yeah...thats whats up. my pump was jacked up. it wont even turn a full revolution w/o hanging up now (old one). hehe good luck emoji

If I remember right, the P/S belt (also A/C) is a seperate belt from the alternator. The alternator has its own belt. So, as long as that belt is spinning, your alternator is spinning. Does the car die after it's on? Lights dim? If not, I would suspect your alternator is fine, you might have a bum battery, a bad ground somewhere, or (more likely) a draw on the system.

In terms of the water pump, it's driven by the timing belt, so it would have nothing to do with the accesory belts. Sounds like you have a bad pump, nothing new in our motors. If it's spewing coolant, then a weep hole or seals are most likely to blame.

When you're in there, put another timing belt on, since coolant doesn't work very well as a lubricant.

Also, I would do a compression check, and change your thermostat. A severe overheating might cause a head gasket to pop. (It did on my winter beater)

Good luck!

How often do you start the car?

What kind of battery?

What kind of elaborate stereo equipment do you have installed that could be putting a slow drain on the battery when it's not running?

right now i took all stereo equipment out except my head unit, and no wires are pulling a load stereo related, anyways.

I TRY to drive it minimum 1-2 times a week, but not if I have to keep jumpstarting it.

The alarm and door poppers are always on, so I wonder if that's the culprit.

It's a new walmart battery purchased in Oct 2004. pfffft

I'd take that battery back and swap it. I have seen many of those nEverstart batteries die shortly after purchase.

Finally, after 2 months of raining weekends, this is what I have found so far:

The steering belt was shredded on the right side; a small chunk was taken out of it. What could have caused this? I just replaced it in July. Almost looked as if my water pump pulley wasn't aligned properly with the steering pulley?

My thermostat was broken off on one side, and the little ball bearing inside broke out too. I'm still taking things apart but that's what I found out so far. That must have been the cause of all the water and coolant spewing everywhere.

Ok, now where's the water pump? Do I have to remove the timing belt? So far I have the entire powersteering assembly off, hanging by a few hoses, and the steering belt is off and I removed the thermostat and housing. I also removed my heat sheild and anything loose in the general area. I'm wondering if my water pump is fine, maybe only the thermostat blew. I still have to replace almost any hoses under there, since everythings worn and cracked at 120k heh.

Thanks guys....

Any help is appreciated.

The waterpump is on the right side of the car. There is a metal tube that runs under the exhaust manifold that runs to it. Check to see if that is still in the hole in the block. That may be where the coolant's coming from.

Ok I got ac and ps belts off, ps pump and pulley off, removed just about everything around on that side. I see the water pump, it's under the lower timing belt cover. My timing belt and a/c belts look fine. What do I take off next to get to the water pump? Am I going to need those special tools to remove a pulley, sprocket, or something? It looks like my UDP is in the way from me taking off the water pump or lower timing belt cover.

Furthermore, looks like a bolt is stripped on the bottom of the alternator, where the tensioner or bottom rod bolt is. I see an angle bracket holding tight a stripped out bolt head with a "10" on it. The other side of the shaft is the bolt I loosened to get the alternator belt off. How am I going to get this stripped bolt off that's on the other side of it?

For the rest of the day I closed the hood and lowered the car back down. I still have everything in peices and taken apart for now, just kinda shoved everything in little zip lock freezer baggies and threw em in the back seat for now.

Any help is appreciated thanks.

Ok I read on Unorthodox website that I have to loosen the UDP to get to the water pump. It's called the "crankshaft pulley", right? So I take that off, which I read is hard as hell to loosen, get another person to have it in 5th gear, and press/hold brake down hard as hell and break the pulley loose.

Is this correct? I should not have to remove the timing belt or fuck up the timing this way. The belt was changed 13,000 miles ago, anyways. There's no cracking or anything from what I can see. Only my steering belt was shredded on the right hand side.

Well, I've got an unconventional way to get the bolt out.

Don't sue me if it doesn't work for you. emoji

Car on stands, rear wheels blocked, put a socket and the biggest wrench you have on the bolt, and adjust it so you're gonna unbolt the thing.

now, put the end of the wrench inside a tire, or on the ground or with a concrete slab or cinder block or something.

Kick the motor over with the starter. Try not to actually start the car, just kick it.

You may have to do it more than once, and the bolt will loosen.

hehe, don't flame me for this, and be careful for obvious reasons.

Timing belt has to come off to get to the waterpump. You'll need a harmonic balancer puller to get the UR pulley off, you can rent one at AutoZone for $15 or i have one you can borrow.

doesn't the UR pulley have 3 screws to take the pulley off the center hub without having to take the whole thing off?

I doubt you can (easily) get the timing belt over the hub, plus you can't time the motor if the timing mark on the sprocket is covered up by the pulley hub emoji emoji emoji

Can't. Not gonna be in town, otherwise I'd love to come over and help. Going to Dallas Thursday to see Motley Crue and going to Beaumont Friday afternoon/evening to hang out with family and spend some away-time with the GF.
