#85072, "what color is a new OEM crankshaft?"

is the stock crank silver when it is brand new, or recently cleaned, or is it dark brown or black?

that's what i need to confirm...the reason i ask is that my old crank journals are silver and the crankshaft is brown. i thought it was just oily so i cleaned a small area and it's still brown. the thing is that my crankshaft in the new motor is silver...i think i may have gotten a forged crank by mistake.

i was gonna do a blue anodize on it but i couldnt find a glass oil pan and clear motor oil. anyway, that kicks fucking ass because the crankshaft in my new motor is about as shiny as my valve cover...i suppose VT stuck the forged crank in even though i called them back and told them to build the motor with a stock crank...they didnt charge me for the forged crankshaft either. i guess that makes up for it taking 12 weeks to build the motor instead of 4-6 weeks like the original estimate was. it really sucks that they dont build for us anymore though. here's a pic of the crank:

the old one has just been stained by the oil. If you were to glass bead it,(not the journals) it would be silver.

would they have glassbeaded the crank before building the motor for me? i dont see why they would do that.

They probably hot tanked it which I beleve would yeild the same outcome. If it was new it would be silver too.

Nope, that's a stock crank. it's just been cleaned.. hit your stock crank with a wirewheel and some brakleen and it'll look like that too.

One way to tell if it is forged or cast is to look at the casting line that runs from one end of the crank to the other (you will be able to see it on the rough part of the crank). If it is a thin casting line it is a cast crank. If it is wide it is forged.
