i know but most people aren't going to read through all that. i think we had this discussion before and all the AEM advocates could do was throw around a bunch of big names that use AEM. no real arguments for it's advantages over the MS. I guess if you like stickers the megasquirt doesn't have a cool logo you can slap on your car like the AEM. that means you get less style points and can't unlock anymore races emoji

Not to come off like a dick, here, but that link is pretty much useless. To sum it up:

Is there a universal application available yet?
No, but we will let you know.
Good. I have a BMW.
Well I read something in Super Street.

I'll stick with my MSnS thank you very much. I imagine less than 1% of the membership of this site will ever have need of the higher end capabilities the AEM EMS might offer over the MSnS. MS is more than capable of handling anything you want to throw at it, why spend another $700 or so for a big name product?

Megasquirt = custom tailored for the 2GNT
AEM EMS = custom tailored for, uh, well not your car anyways.

sorry silverbullet, i think it's awesome that you've put in the effort to get the AEM to work with a 420A, but I really don't see the advantage besides being able to say you did it.

and... didn't somethin blow up when the techs were tryna set something up? emoji

It sounds to me that your looking for a "Chip". What major mods are you talking about? What do you hope to gain? Are you just talking about a computer upgrade that will give your car 40hp?

Sounds maybe more what your talking about.

Why is the 16x16 table a more pain than the 12x12 on MS? It seems ironic to question a better table?

Why does the MS still use the PCM (useless functions, but not true PCM standalone replacement..)?

If I blow up my MS will they ship a new unit "ready to plug in" in a day or two and not charge me anything?

Will my nearest dyno shop give me, so called "factory AEM certified" help with my standalone without having to post a topic and having someone guess my problem? My point is that AEM has the "brand" that will give you support for your purchase.

closed loop built in feature, set your desired A/F ratio and the software adjusts the tables? The MS is compatable from what the web says but it doesn't go into detail? If it is capable how much do you have to modify the MS to work with it?

traction control built in and ready to go in one box?

Boost control, I heard the MS can do it but I didn't see it on the site? http://www.megasquirt.info/index.html
and the second question does the MS come ready to go with it?

It seems like everything with the MS is compatable but needs to be modified?

If MS had a unit ready to go for our 420a that only required a harness and replaced our piece of crap PCM that is stuck in the engine compartment then I would be willing to consider? I'm looking for a full-race design that will have factory support/financial backing and it shows by who wins the drag races.

I'm sure there is more info, but my eyes are starting to hurt from all of this info and I need a beer!

Sorry for all the negative comments, I'm just trying to push the limits of what our so-called "not-worth turboing" car.

I doubt anyone has a problem with a table allowing for finer adjustment, but if you can do what you need with 12x12, why bother?

I'm not sure, but I know the MS will do everything I'll ever need it to do under the hood, so again, why bother? Monster Miatas run V8s off a Mustang ECU, while the stock Miata ECU controls everything else. Shared responsibility I guess. If either goes down you're still pretty much fucked, but not totally fucked imo.

No they won't. A good point, but for the cost of a brand new EMS (not standing tuning the thing, although I'm sure you could just reload your last settings off the laptop to the new unit), you could actually purchase 3 MS prebuilt (and do the same).

I honestly wouldn't want anyone from AEM any where near my engine bay, let alone to tune my MS. emoji And yes, you could post tuning issues on the MS forums, like it appears many people do on the AEMpower site, but there's a solid core of die hard 420A tuners getting into the MS who will be able to focus their attention on our specific issues, rather than a large corporation having to figure out what's wrong with this particular custom application of their product.

My point is that AEM has the "brand" that will give you support for your purchase.

And this is invaluable, however the MS is written in open source Assembler, which allows anyone to adjust it on their own and continually advance the product on an on-going basis (given a knowledge of the language), independent of market fluctuations or product demand. For this reason, the enthusiasts who develop and modify MS software for various platforms will be able to assist each other independent of application with product issues.

Well you got me on that one. If it's needed to properly tune a boosted 420A application, then I know the MS has it.

When using onboard wbO2, MS does the same with accurate fuel calculations to 15,000rpm.

As the product is open source and intended to be used by enthusiast willing to develop the product for their own unique application. Just like people who go out and buy kit cars and airplanes. They know they can be built to be exactly what they want them to be, but they have to put in some effort themselves to have it turn out right.

Not sure. That's why this community is fortunate to have Lee working so dilligently on this project for us. I'm not sure exactly how much work has to be done in terms of code modifications, but Lee's taking care of his own on this one, and I think it's very admirable.

Pretty sure Lee's about got that nailed down. Mind you, I doubt its as advanced a system as the EMS, but where you would need such an advanced DSC on a track car, you should more than likely be looking into something more professional like the EMS.

Boost control, I heard the MS can do it but I didn't see it on the site?

You'd have to ask Lee. I think he's about got that taken care of too. Along with a couple other neat little features which probably cost in upwards of $100/hr to tune properly at a "certified" shop with EMS. You know, the megasquirt.sourceforge.net/extra/waterinj.html feature of MS is pretty cool too!

Again, considering the source and community project aspect of this product, this should be expected. It's what keeps the costs down and development speeds up.

No doubt you would! All things being equal; $300 vs $1000? No questions about that one! emoji

From what I can gather of your current (and near future) set up, you aren't beyond your means when it comes to this selection. If you want to build a full out professional level, professionally tuned track car, then the EMS is a damn fine product for you. Nothing wrong with your choice and I don't aim to shoot you down for making it as you've done.

Hahaha. I hear ya. Six of one, half a dozen of the other. OOOH! Did you say beer?

I agree. Nothing wrong with having an educated position and arguing what you believe in, sir. I just feel I talked enough shit on the Megasquirt (based solely on it's flamboyantly gay name) that I at least owe it to Lee to argue it's finer points as best I can. Besides, considering the price of an EMS and qualified tuning, I think you can agree that the average Joe with his 2GNT is going to find that sort of thing to be just too damn cost-prohibitive. Although I can see how having a few people push the envelope with these higher end products is the best way to drive up interest and hopefully make them more attainable for more people. I've just picked my pony and intend to make the most of it. As long as you remain open to the ideas of others and don't look down on them for chosing to go a different route than you, then we can all agree that your goal of pushing the limits is a true slap in the face to anyone who perpetuate the "sell it and buy a turbo" crap. Go fast with class, right? Right.
