#84878, "CEL code 31, car shutting down"

Before I start getting flamed with use the search feature and all that let me explain.. I have searched about this CEL code 31 and everyone says ignore it. But sometimes while I'm driving down the highway my car will lose all RPM's, have absolutely no power, and then shut off. After a couple of tries it will eventually crank back up and act like nothing ever happened. This happens a lot after I've been driving around 15 minutes but this isn't always the case. Sometimes I can make a full 30 minute drive somewhere and nothing will happen at all. And sometimes it will do the same exact thing after 5 minutes. Hooked the car up to a computer and only code we are getting is this 31.. Is it even possible for the Evaporative or Purge or whatever cannister to cause my car to shut off?? Cause if this doesn't fix it, I don't have any idea what it could be? I'd rather not take the car to Satan as they will undoubtedly charge me unreasonable rates to not to anything to my car. Any help would be appreciated.

yeah, my car was doing the same thing. random rpm while cruising and random shut offs. All I did was bought a new 95 ecu for ~$200 and never had those problems since! did you get two used ecu? or new ones?

I sent it in to have it rebuilt and after I got it back they hooked it up to a computer and said that the ECU was still bad. Sent it back in and got another and hooked it up and this one is supposed to be fine.. Only code I'm getting now is the CEL 31. Would a new purge cannister solve this?? Or whatever the damn thing does cause the car to shut off if it was functioning incorrectly?

The car should run fine even with the EVAP system completely removed. It's only purpose is to prevent gas vapors from venting into the area around the vehicle when it's parked in case someone should walk by smoking or something. The only way I could think this might even be remotely possible would be if somehow a clogged EVAP line *might* contribute to vapor lock or something. And that's really, really stretching. I've had CEL31 for over 5 years straight now, and it's got nothing to do with the other operations of the engine.

I'd stick with the ECU advice.

Noticed something new today. After my car shuts down (randomly of course) and I try to crank back up, it seems my fuel pump isn't engaging. I'll cut the ignition on a couple of times and after a couple of tries, I'll finally hear the fuel pump cut on and the car cranks right back up. Could this be a faulty fuel pump or something to do with all these vacuum hoses and what not?? The CEL code 31 doesn't bother me at all.. I'll get used to the light, I just want my car to stop randomly shutting off..

It could be, but if the pump isn't priming, you might also want to check that you're getting 12v+ on the middle coilpack wire. if not, this points to an ASD relay issue, or an ECU switching of the ASD relay failure.

You can get FACTORY REMAN ecus from the dealership for about $200, guranteed to wortk with the typical 90 day parts warranty. For an ECU, i wouldn't go anywhere else, ever.

Eeeeh, can you help a brother out in lay-man's terms?? emoji I'm not what you would consider a car guy, but I do know a little. My stepdad used to be a mechanic but he hasn't had any experience with Mitsubishi's. So what do I need to do to check the things you've suggested? BTW I did look my evap. cannister over today and there are two large cracks in it which suggests a hell of a leak. And also the hose that's by itself coming off the top of the cannister isn't hooked to anything? Where is is supposed to hook into?? But the way I understand it, the evap system wouldn't cause my car to shut down, anyway? Am I right?

You are right.

Basically, the next time it happens and the pump isn't turning on like it should, get a multimeter and test for 12v+ n themiddle of the three wires running to the ignition coil. That's the black thing your sparkplug wires plug into. If there's not 12v+ on it with the key in the run position or while cranking, you may have a bad ASD (automatic shut down) relay, which is one of the 2 to 4 relays on the firewall in front of the driver. if the relay is not bad, then the odds are the ECU is not properly grounding the relay to energize the fuel pump and coil pack, which would indicate an ECU problem.

I've sent my ECU in twice to be remanufactured.. After the first time after hooking it up to a computer they said they computer was still bad, but after we hooked it up the second time they said the computer was fine??? So I'm not sure about that. I'll try the coilpack and ASD relay and see where to go from there. Thanks for your suggestions..

JD

Edit: Oh yeah, I called Satan and they said I'd have to get a new ECU, couldn't do the reman?? And is the ASD your talking about also referred to as the fuel-pump relay?? And where are ya'll getting these "new" ECU's for $200??? Satan quoted me a real nice one at 667.00.. HA! In their dreams.

One other thing. I found this link and his problem sounds a lot like mine. Cause sometimes when I'm driving my engine will completely stall out to 0 RPM's but they car is still running. But then after 10 or so seconds it will go dead. And not come back on til I get the fuel pump engaged. *shrug*
