*I am in the market for a new engine(low compression). I have a spare block that's ready to go anytime.
*I don't consider myself as a mechanic, but I can read and know how to torque. I have never worked on an engine, the closest thing to an engine work I've done would be T-belt and the other parts(pullies, water pump, etc).
*First question is: Can a begginer(me) assemble an engine? Because every time I read the engine section on Chilton's or soemthing, it's got all kinds of gauges and seems to me like hard core measurings. OR should I get some on-line or some other place to work on it. I would really like to learn how to rebuild an engine, but at the same time I really don't want to mess up ~$1300 worth of parts and have a shitty engine nor pay some crappy shop to build a crappy one for me.
*Second question: If I was to do it on-line, who else works on 420A's now? Only place I really know is SlowBoyRacing.com. I know VT doesn't do our motors anymore. What about howell's crate motors? If I was to pay, I would like to get quality work done.
*Third question: If I was to rebuild it myself, how do I determine a good shop? I live in BFE state of TN. I hardly know any auto machine shops. Can machine shops really not mess up on their jobs? I guess what I'm asking is would there be a big difference in quality from shop to shop? or pretty much the same? Also, what exactly need to be done at a shop(blue print, bore, hot tank, etc)?
*Forth question: If I was to rebuild it myslef, I was thinking about ordering howell's rebuilt kit. BUT, I've been looking at other parts/stores and I honesly don't know what company is good for what(like eagle vs. crower rods, je vs. wiseco pistons).

I just want to build my motor right. I'm willing to spend whatever it takes to build a strong motor. Let me know your inputs. TIA

dont order from howell, or you will be sorry you ever did, and wait 5+ months for your parts, but its really not to hard to rebuild a motor, i say go for it.

I agree with talonguy2005. I ordered a short block from Howell and it took a little over 3 months to get it. If I had known it was going to take that long I would have built it myself. But I am happy with the work they did.

I am from Thompson's Station TN., just a few miles south of Nashville. There isn't any good mechanic shops around middle TN that I know of personally. There is a few good machine shops that you can get all your machining done at though.

My advice is, just get your motor worked on by a professional. Just make sure the work is covered under a warranty. From what I have learned from building a motor is, clearance, clearance and clearance. Just pass on the dead presidents to someone who knows what they're doing and free yourself of worries but hey if you are the type of person that wants to learn the hard way, more power to you, but if the motor fails you just learned the more expensive way. I'm not trying to burst your bubble, I'm just giving you advices that may save your car from you setting it on fire. Hehhehe. Goodluck.

If you do not want to take on the task of assembling the motor yourself, then have the machine shop do it. I suggest to call around, and maybe talk to several automotive repair shops, to see who they would reccomend for doing good machine work. One thing to remember also, don't shop for the cheapest price quote. When building a high performance engine, you want to pay for the best quality job possible, so expect to pay a little more for good work. It really is worth every penny. I would look at a very reputable machine shop, one that is familiar with 4 cylinder motors, and also building race engines. Believe it or not, not too many machine shops work a lot on 4 cylinder engines. Most people find a junkyard motor nowadays, or buy a pre-built shortblock.

I build our engines for ERT, bare minimum you'd need is a ring filer, feeler guages, plastiguage, torque wrench, and wrench sets. If yuo are going to do it yourself, have all the machine work done to spec, and take it slow. Pay very close attention to all specs.

I'm not going to say you can't do it or well do it right but, if your going to put boost on it you want to have it done right the first time and give you some margin for small tuning errors. Common pratice is your new motor shouldn't see boost till the break in period is over. But anyways you are in the right place to get the helping knowledge you need. My opinion ......if your uncomfortable doing it and have the money, buy it or have it done for you.
