#84718, "what's up with my speedometer??? ... lost."

Sup guys.
This is about my speedometer.

well, for about 1 month now, I been noticing some funny thing about my speedometer. but just a glance of it and didn't see clear. Mostly happen when I am going at around 30-40MPH, with stick in neutral, and just crusine, and I kinda see my speedo needle fell to 0mph and jump back up to the current speed (30-40MPH). And the above is all before today morning. (never took a good look at it before, since I kept my eyes on the roads most the time)

TODAY, I was STOPPED at the red light, and start looking at my car interior, and all of a sudden I see my speedo needle just JUMP from 0MPH to 20MPH then back to 5MPH to 35MPH, then to 0MPH then to 30MPH, (you guys get what I mean, it swings around but never exceed ~40mph) and continues for like 5 sec until the green lights and I GO.

BUT AS SOON as I start the car, the needle will be FINE in to the correct speed and slowly move up as I accelerate.

I AM LOST. what's up with that??

What I did to my car that I think is related/cause to this:
1) I just got a brand new speed sensor from Mitsubishi (1 year ago)
2) I did unplugged the clutch switch for remote start (2.5 years ago)
(I really concern about the #2, is this causing the ECU to think I am in neutral or whatever??)

Please give me inputs and help guys!
I greatly appreciate this.
Gil

P.S. worrying is it my tranny? ECU? speedometer? etc? etc?

there's either the speed sensor on the tranny, the wires to the gauge cluster, or the gauge cluster itself. i believe if you search you will find many occassions of this happening and get you an idea of where to look. i would probably start with the wires behind the dash.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Have you ever taken your cluster out for any reason Gil? Like installing gauge overlays or anything. Once you get it out it should be pretty easy for you to figure out how to take it apart. As far as the speed sensor goes, it seems to be too much to be coincidence that you replace that part and now are having trouble with your speedo.

As far as the clutch switch that is completely irrelevant and tells nothing to the computer, it is merely a cutoff switch which leads to the ignitin switch. You can leave it unhooked.

I would check to make sure the speedsensor wire harness plug is properly seated in the speed sensor. This has happened to me before and it was just due to a bad connection plugging into the speedsensor.
