#8410, "exhaust smell"

lately i've been noticing that my exhaust smells really bad, liek that nasty who farted smell. i only notice it when i'm pulling in my driveway between my house and my neighbors. i was wondering if this smell is normal. also, i just had it inspected and i figured that if there was something coming out of the exhaust, that they would pick it up when they do the dyno with that vacuum thing on the muffler.

It sounds like your cat-converter might be getting a little old. They smell like sulfer when they get older. Just a guess though...

Well, let me rephrase. It may not be "bad" but it may not be burning the contaments in the exhaust gases effectively, hence dirty emissions, hence funny smell....I'm really not sure though, this is just a guess.

They've got it right.

usually that "rotten egg" smell is due to a dead or dying catalytic converter. If the archives were available, i'd tell you to search them.. it is a question that has come up often, and this has always been the solution.

Use it as an excuse to have a high flow cat, the diameter of your choice, welded in. If you can find one that is flanged and will bolt in, more power to you. I got a 2.5" high flow at a local rip-you-off performance shop for $80 cash, and had it welded in for $20 with no detrimental effects. I cleared a check engine light over it, too.

I have no CAT and my car sticks like Gas/Ass all the time so I know that your problem is the CAT.

My fiancé has a Pontiac GTP and she was having the same problem. Usually if your performance is still there it won't be your catalytic converter. If you notice the smell from the back of the car, then it's your converter. But if you pop the hood and can smell it, check your battery. My fiancé had a bad cell in her battery and when we shut off the car, you could literally hear the battery boiling and steam was coming out of the batteries vents. It took over a week to figure out what it was. The battery got so hot after evaporating so much fluid that it was melting the housing. Batteries have sulfuric acid in them, and that's another place where you get a rotten egg smell.

yeah, i know the whole bad battery smell and it's definatly coming from the back of the car. so if it's a bad cat then is it something i have to get fixed or is the worst affect that there is a bad smell. will it affect the overall performance of the car?
