Sup guys.
It's Gilbert here again.
I haven't been having problem with my baby eclipse for over 1 year now after I turbo charged my car.

Now, today when I was driving down to Manhattan NY, something REALLY SHITTY has happened!
Let me explain the situation.

1.5 months ago - 2 months ago, I went to drag race!
On the track before I start dragging, I checked my engine oil and it's on MINIMUM. so I went around asking and bought a bottle of engine oil with a guy 50w-40 and added till it's at 3/4 full.
Then I ran like 3-4 times on drag race.

THEN lately, (2-3 weeks) I always smell NOT as normal smell from my exhaust, but I didn't bother or notice anything, UNTIL today.

Through out the entire driving today on local to highway down to NYC, I always smell nasty smell whenever I slow down or stop. And
when I got out to the ramp and stopped, I see a thick smoke (maybe white, my g/f said blue) from my tail pipe.

So I am like..SHIT. I stopped at a KFC, and I open my hood.
FUCK ME! my entire ENGINE bay is mostly covered with engine oil!!!!

Mostly on my radiator, fan, intake side of the turbo, pipes to engine intake, air filter, front half of engine head, inside hood, ......

My OIL light didn't GOES on but my engine light did (it's been on since my rear O2 sensor), and I shut off my engine. check engine oil, SHOW up NOTHING on the dip stick. I added back to 3/4 right away. Start up the engine. and I hear this FUNNY sound.

poop.... poop..... poop..... from the TRANNY side of the engine.
Not sure if from inside Engine block, but it's from the tranny side. NOT LOUD yet. but from insdie the car with no music or driving. I can BARELY hear it once every 5-10 second.

With hood open and outside standing infront of the engine, I only hear the POOP like every 5 second or so and every 5 second I hear a two or three repeat poop.. poop... poop then wait 5 second or so and continue.

ALSO, the smoke from my exhaust is NOT ALWAYS thick smoke, sometimes it's NORMAL with no smell from the tail pipe. like I drove back slowly home from NYC, when I got home and get off the car. no smoke from tail pipe.

Also, before I drive back Home in NYC, I kinda clean up some of the oil in my engine bay, and when I got home, not a big difference from after cleaning in NYC. so I assume not alot of oil spitting out! 20miles drive.

But now I am worried. what's wrong?
Smoke from tail pipe (occasionally), oil all over my engine bay, and poop sound from tranny side of the engine.

I have lifter sound before (tick tick tick)
my old eclipse of g/f's car, spun bearing is (knock knock knock)
But this time, it sound different.
what can it be?
please help!!!!!!!

Gil

So you guys believe it's Ring Land?

Ok, I will do a compression test ASAP and try it out.
But if Ring Land, why Oil all over engine bay?
It made a hole in the engine block?

Also, if it is ring land, can I just remove the head, and change the piston?

or do I need to bore the cylinder wall?

Thanks all.

oil all over engine from blow-by. the rings arent sealing anymore.
you will need to drop the motor and pull the pan off to replace the piston. you might as well start looking at a full rebuild... sorry. it sucks, i know...

OK...
When I first saw it, I was thinking about ringland..
And now you all say that... I am more and more leaning toward believing it.

So let's take it as ringland.
Will ringland damage other parts in the engine block?

Damage cylinder wall? crank?

Also, I do wanted to do make it as more performance, can I JUST change to the JE piston??

Can I keep it stock rod, crank, block, Just HONE the cylinder wall, and put in the new JE pistons and use the current rods?

Thanks.

if you keep running with a toasted ring land, its simply a matter of short time before you do something more damaging. it can damage the wall if you keep driving on it, and will do worse if the piston fails all together. you can change to just pistons, and go higher end, but stock rods can only handle so much abuse that they weren't designed for. You would be better off with new rods as well, but if you are diligent enough to not beat the shit out of it after rebuilding... you could get away with it. but just know that if a rod goes tits up... THATS BAD!

Thanks Tim.
Yes I am definitely not driving it anymore.
I drove it back from NYC very slowly and below 2K RPM.

now it's parked and won't be started again.

Well, I do know that the stock 420A piston is alot weaker then the stock Rods.

so now I am considering.
If I take the entire block out, get it done by VT which includes bore, new piston, rods, bearings, etc etc etc. with shipping and all. cost about $2200.

So now I am thinking of another option.
Can I just change the piston and it's ring? anything else I should change?

I mean, I won't (never will) run more then 15PSI. will changing the piston to forge and honing the wall be enough?

Thanks all.
Gil

P.S. How much PSI can the stock rod withstand? stock crank? stock bearing? if below 15PSI boost, is the piston the only thread for our stock 420A engine?

You CANNOT rate connecting rod strength based off of boost pressure. Quit asking if it will take 15psi.

Of course the stock piston is weaker than the stock rod. How many people come on here and say I cracked/bent a stock rod?! None unless the nitrous backfire, sieze a bearing and throw a rod, or hydrolock.

How is anyone to know whether you can just hone and replace your pistons? You haven't even taken it apart yet. Best case you can slap some JEs w/ some new rings, use your stock rods, get some new bearings and be done. Is it the best way ... no. Will it work ... probably. Depending on damage to the cylinder walls you may have to bore out the cylinder, which will require over bored pistons, yada yada. If you're tearing it all apart might as well spring the $300 to nab some eagle rods for some extra insurance.

Also, VT doesn't build 420a motors anymore. You won't break the stock crank. You are going to replace your bearings with this rebuild.

Well, Tommyboy used to use up stock rods till they bent. I can't remember if it was because he just had a box of them sitting around, or if it was that he just wanted to figure out how much they would take. But I do remember that the limit was somewhere around 13psig on his HRC kit. Anything above that and he was bending rods. You may want to search the archives to find out more about his experience with stock rods.

If you really don't want to do any more damage to the motor then just pull it, and tear it down.

If you want to be sure that the rebuild is done well then have a machine shop figure out how much damage there is. Cylinder damage is not easy to see with the naked eye, so its really the ONLY way to be sure that the block will be in good shape for a rebuild. Any good machine shop should be able to rebuild your motor, or you could rebuild it yourself. VT is a good machine shop, but there's more than one good machine shop. If you want one in the Philidelphia area I can recommend Jess Miller. Ask around and I'm sure you'll be able to find a capable machine shop close by. I found Jesse by just looking in the phone book, the ad looked good so I searched the web. They had a web site and it looked good, so I went down to meet him and he gave me a tour of the shop and a chance to see some of the work they were doing at the time.

If you don't care how good the rebuild is, then skip the machine shop. Like Avenger said, it'll probably work. I've done it before and it worked ok. Then again, with that particular situation it was a siezed crankshaft that prompted the rebuild and so I knew going into it that cylinder damage was not the cause of the rebuild. You are not in the same situation. There is likely cylinder damage in your situation.

Good luck whatever you decide.

When my turbo went up, I had white smoke comming from the tail pipe at times, it would lessen when it heated up. The last time I drove with that turbo I got home and there was incredibly low oil in the pan, and my exhaust was smoking like mad. It had blown nearly all of the oil threw the exhaust and clogged my cat enough that the car would not even run. I had problems with the car for months later, eventually ended up in me tearing it down, and replacing a piston with cracked ring lands as suggested in previous posts. I think it would take alot to spread oil over the front of your engine bay due to blow-by. Is it posible the oil was comming from the intake side of the turbo? I'm not sure what you mean by poop sound, but perhaps it is the turbine hitting the walls of the turbo? Pull the intake off of the turbo and see if it is clean, as well as jiggle the blades to check for play, it should barely move.

ALSO after checking turbo, if not the turbo, do compression check to see if its blow-by. $15 tool a autozone, takes 10 minutes, unhook relays on firewall, pull plugs, screw it in to plug threads 1 at a time, crank 10times or so, check compression, move on. You really dont want anything under 180 or any numbers that are incredibly variant from the rest.

Sorry to hear about your troubles gil. Anyway ^^^ is correct. Do a compression check and see what you get. When I blew my 3 pistons (twice cause I'm a retard) they had compression @ around 20-40 psi. I would also bet that you broke the ring lands.
As for forged pistons and stock rods. Im running 11-13 psi daily with stock rods and forged pistons(8.8:1). I also have a TTI racing head gasket, and my compression is around 160 on all 4 cyl.
I would agree with the above statements on splurging on some nice rods to go with the forged pistons. If I was going to upgrade this beast anymore I would def go for better rods. FYI I hate my car.

Tommy actually had a custom kit running a 16g or a big 16g (the turbo I could be wrong about). Remember he had the wild tubular manifold until it started cracking. He was running 18psi when he bent his stock rods (on some forged piston). I just don't consider 1 person's experience gospel. I don't think there are enough facts to say that the HP he was producing was causing the rods to be bent vs. some sort of tuning issue.

Thanks alot guys!

Merry Christmas to all of you!
I just got back to NYC from Las Vegas today morning.
I was out for 4 days as a Xmas vacation. (worst is, I found out my car is fxxked 6 hrs before I leave NYC to LV)

Anyhow!
Thank you all for your opinions!
I will check the turbo and do compression test on Monday.
And I will let you know the result.

The reason I don't want to BORE out the engine and do a PERFECT VT engine rebuilt, because I don't want to take my ENTIRE engine out!
I wnat to leave my engine block in the car. (due to some apartment rental) issues etc....

I will keep you guys up to date once I check things out!
Thanks all!
Gil

Sup guys.
I been thinking for the pass 2 days since I was back from Las Vegas.
And tonite, I decided I should of just post it on to the forum and ask!

Since now my engine is in bad shape. Either it's my turbo, or my piston ring land is cracked, or etc. I shouldn't start my engine and run my car anymore! since running my engine will create more damage to my cylinder wall, and etc if indeed is my piston ring land.

But if I want to confirm and do the compression test, don't I have to warm up my engine, and do alot of cranking? I am worried that will damage more. what should I do?

Thanks guys.
Any inputs are greatly appreciated.
Gil

You can do a cold compression test. The results wont be your actuall compression because the rings will not be heated and won't be fully sealing to the cylinderwall, but you will be able to confirm if there is a problem with the motor (example results. 180-190-90-180) cyl 3 would be shot. If all the numbers are close then the motor is likely fine.

OK. Thanks. I just want to confirm. Coz now the temperature outside is like 20-25F. is that TOO COLD to do a compression test at COLD START?

Also, the car has been sitting there for 1 week full without starting. so I assume most or maybe all engine oil are back to the oil pan. do I have to start the car to get the engine oil all over the internal of the engine before I do the compression test?

Thank you all for your help and opinions!

If you can start it for a few mins without any loud clanks or crunching noises, I would go ahead and do that. But if you are afraid to start it, it will not hurt to do the test with the motor cold in those temperatures (it only takes a few cranks). As I said the readings will still give you an idea of what the compression in the cylinders are, and which one(s) is/are the problem... if there is a problem in there. Also if you do perform a warm test and you dont find a problem, I would wait a half hour or so after you do the first test I would do it again with the motor cold. When I checked my compression warm with the cracked ring land the #'s weren't so bad because the cracked parts had expanded and kind of sealed somewhat, but with the motor cold it was clear that #3 cylinder was shot.
