My 97 eclipse is burning oil pretty badly.
It smokes a lot after the car is warmed up and in idle. I did a compression test and the numbers seem fine, 210-205-180-210

I described the problem to a local shop and they said it probably has to do with the piston rings? And to fix it will need an engine rebuild? Need some more opinions on the matter. What do you guys think?

maybe leaky valve seals?

if it was leaky valve seals wouldn't it just smoke when u first start up and then it'll go away after the car warms up?

Mines, exactly the opposite. At first startup is ok, not much smoke, then when the car warms up and when u idle, that's when it starts smoking.

worn valve guides? that was my problem.

most probably is your valve guides, let me know if you need to fix that...chris

how would i check if it's the valve guides?

its either valve guides or seals, my car did that too, but i rebuilt my head, and it was gone, but i kno its one of them.

-Bone stock for now.

pull your exhaust manifold off and with a light look at the backsides of the valves. they will be all crusty with burnt oil deposits on them.

do the same with the intake but that requires more work and a mirror to see.
