#83274, "Replacing 95 GS head with wrecked 96 GSX head."

My mechanic has run across a wrecked 96 eclipse GSX. The engine block is ruined do to being cracked from the wreck. The head and the turbo is supposedly still in good shape. Can anyone tell me any reason not to get the head and turbo and switch them out with my car (95 eclipse GS/auto).

i doubt it will work easily, i think the 420a has a better head anyways, but i can't confirm either. you would have to do a full drive train swap. there is a company that does this over on a diffrent forum. that could be something to consider. wouldn't all wheel drive be nice?

watch out everyone, this guy knows exactly what he's talking about. So exactly how does a head affects drive train? This is like 4 degrees of separation here. You two need to step back from your cars and pick up a few books.

Ryan, thanks for your info, and thanks for all the info from you other guyz (funny stuff). This is my first eclipse and so far i'm not impressed with it. I have had the problem with starting the car and random dying. I'm not to enthused on having to spend $300 to $400 on getting the timing belt changed every 60k miles either. I read in the forums daily to learn but you guyz still use terms I don't understand yet. And what I gathered from my post is that the GSX engine happens to be a 420a and the 95 GS is a 4g63.

So if I fun across a 95 GST can I swap those engines out with no problems?

emoji that's like what, once every four years. and once you've searched tons on changing the timing belt, you'll be able to do it yourself.

and just to ram this into your brain more..

RS - Non-Turbo 420a designed by chrysler, front wheel drive.

GS - Non-Turbo 420a designed by chrysler, front wheel drive.

GST - Turbo 4g63 designed by mitsubishi, front wheel drive.

GSX - Turbo 4g63 designed by mitsubishi, all wheel drive.

420a and 4g63 do NOT mix.

this type of thing should be put wherever somebody signs up, in bold.

I can. SO can about 10,000 other people who have spent a total of 5 minutes on any DSM forum....

IT'S A DIFFERENT ENGINE. WHY DON'T YOU JUST HAVE YOUR MECHANIC INSTALL A SET OF HEADS FROM A VIPER. YOU CAN USE THE SAME OIL FILTER, WHY NOT THE SAME HEAD?

Or chalk me up to being an asshole and let him try it. Have fun trying to get the timing belt on, or perform a miracle with pulleys and be the first kid on your block to have to install an air filter on your muffler and explain why you get steam out your CAI on cold mornings.

Considering that, if you put the gears on the right side, you would have the 4g63 head on backwards. It would be sucking air through the header and expelling the exhaust out the intake. Thus, steam out the newly christened CAI muffler...

That is assuming the head would even bolt to the block in the first place.

Why are you guys such haters? For real yo, this is a famous swap, real easy to do, don't let these guys get you down, GO FOR IT! Make sure you tighten the bolts real good though cause the extra cylinder pressure from the GSX drivetrain will blow the welds right off the head if you're not careful.

I swear, Dan. Given the mood I'm generally in these days, I wouldn't be surprised to see me reply to one of these threads with something like, Shoot yourself in the fucking head you goddamned retarded piece of shit mother fucker! While it would accomplish nothing, it would certainly feel good to do so imo.

i don't think i would let that guy work on your car if he's dumb enough to want to do that.

Wouldn't it of just been easier to say...

"The engine in your car is totally different than the engine in the gsx therefore the head swap will not work?"

i guess I don't get the point of all the hostility..although it is funny.

because in the 2gnt world, this question is just like asking "how do i put a condom on?"

shows you have been here since last april...so maybe not that bad for you...but try being here since 01 or from the beginning...and you get REAL sick and tired of this sorta crap. its why me go ballistic about engine swaps and such because every couple weeks someone tries to swap parts or motors and it gets old really fast. youd understand better if you had been here longer...and trust me..youll be like us one day eventually.

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH!!! The head affecting the drivetrain, the viper heads, the supra block!! This is some funny shit!!!

Seriously bro, there is a lot of info here that will be useful if you want a 2gnt. When I got here I didn't know shit, and I mean nothing!! I read and read, made a handfull of expensive and time consuming mistakes and now I can say I am much wiser and I have even gone as far as to drop my pre-med career and pursue a mechanical degree.

Do not get discouraged if you get flamed, but be prepared if you are asking this sort of questions. Oh and BTW, get rid of that mechanic!! If you can find a mechanic with an open mind, then good, cause there is a ton of info here that your mechanic will most likely does not know.

Remember to read and search and ask.

It doesn't bother me, every newbie asks stupid questions like I did. And I did learn something and I do have an open minded mechanic and I plan on keeping him. Most of my stuff I get done is for free with him. Old highschool buddy, he just thru out the idea before we researched it out. And this is the best place I know to research that out. Everyone thanks for the info.
Whats the best thread on reading about switching out a 420a wit the 4g, and is it better or should I just look for an after market turbo and do all the top and bottom end work to accomodate the added air flow.

Here's another stupid question will a 6g fit in the eclipse?
Rip it up fellas...

Man, your really taking advantage of the gas prices falling. Throwing all this fuel onto your already huge blaze.

Make it simple for yourself. Either fix or replace whatever is fudged in your motor now or get another 420A and turbo it. If you dont like that idea, just get another ride. Just please do something, this desk drawer in front of me is big enough to fit my head in, and Im thinkin it shouldnt hurt that bad if I do it quick and hard enough, lol.

Godd luck man

LOL. Forget about it, do not try to fit the 4g into a GS or RS. Either get a GST, GSX or turbo your 420A.

If Tim gets first dibs on newbies, then I call dibs on Canadian Grammar Errors, or CDEs. It's you're! See, I'll use it in a sentence:

Blair, you look like an idiot when your grammar is full of errors. You're not using the right form of the word in your posts. Eh! emoji

And you made some other errors two. <-- emoji
