#8323, "F**king idle... any ideas?"

LAST EDITED ON 03-Oct-01 AT 07:06 PM (PST)

okay, after new bored TB from Howell, my car now does some weird idle shit-it aint really that big of a deal, but im anal so it bugs the shit out of me, heres whats going on: while the car is moving, with it out of gear (the speed doesn't seem to matter) the idle will fall to about 1500-2000rpm and stay there untill the cars comes to a stop. occasionaly it will suge a tiny bit within those ranges but, once stopped it will fall to the normal rpm range. Now, i dont remember the stock TB doing before the bore, so i dont know if its a side effect of the bored out TB, or if my shit was broke before and somehow wound up being "fixed" with the boreing. Anyone else have this problem? i dont have any air leaks, and the gasket is brand new, i un-hooked the negative battery cable for over 30 seconds, but no luck! please help if you got some friggin ideas!!!!!thanks
could it be the IAS motor?

I had that problem after I ported my TB, you're probably getting error code for high idle too.

what fixed mine, was grinding down the idle adjuster screw(I think it can be just screwed out too) till the throttle plate would close far enough for the idle to kick down.

sorry If I'm being vague, but I don't know if theres an exact name for the thingamagigger that I'm talkin about, but if you look where the throttle cable comes into the throttle body, you'll see it right above it.

it's a rather simple fix. it'll save you some swearing....

maybe now because your tb is bored bigger, extra air is going into the motor so that raises the idle rpm. just a thought...

the idle airflow goes though that little passage on the side, what is happening, is the throttle plate isn't seating enough and air is sneaking by it, causeing a high idle. if you can back it down more, you'll close it more and thus, eliminate the problem.

Hey, first off it "might" just be a side effect of the bored throttle body. But what koolade is talking about is the idle screw that is a T20 bit. It's the thing that the throttle plate thing hits when you let off the throttle (you can see it from the outside, and its connected to the throttle cable. I guess it's called a throttle stop or something. I turn that thing out cus my idle is too low, so I think koolade is right in saying to sand it down (but really you should turn it in with a T20). Turn it so its farther in, so the throttle plate will be more closed...

Tim97RS, I know exactly what you are talking about. you would be driving like let's say 30mph, then you are about to come to a stop sign or somthing, so you step on the clutch, you RPMs drope down, but not down enough to reach your idle (like what you said, they will stay up close to 1500 RPM) till you come to a full stop, and that's when the RPM will drop down to normal (less than 1k rpm)

does that ring a bell? if it does, then add me to the same list. the thing is, I have been having this problem for at least 3 years if not more (3 years ago I had my TB, Intake manifold, and head bored, ported, and milled all at once) it did bother me for a little bit, but then, I got used to it.

I am not sure what the hell caused it, but now that you have talked about it, I think it might be the Bored TB.

oh I tried messing with the butterfly stopper and that did not help at all.

You know, Adel just described what happens to my car when I slow down to a stop. Now I have a ported throttle body, but the butterfly is the stock one. I didn't have it doen by howell, I did it myself do remove the hump in the middle of it.

I learned to live with the problem too. Sometimes I thought that my foot was pushing the gas pedal. My idle is pretty normal and no other problems, just when coming to a stop.

I had the jumpy idle once though, my throttle position sensor had come unpluged.

all of you....try grinding it(or screwing it) down. at first, I kept turning it in, and it didn't make a difference, or it did, but then went back. just take that sucker all the way down....it doesn't hurt to have your plate closed all the way....

I have a rock-solid idle now, no fluctuation at all...

Mine has done that ever since I've had my car (before and after turbo). I don't have a bored TB so I dont think it has anything to do with that. I really dont know what would cause it though...

the only problem with the throttle plate is that when its fully closed, the accelerator peice that the cable hooks to, dosent hit that screw that some guys are talking about. and when i hold a stock one up to light, there the same amount of light leak around the edges of the plate as on the bored one. However i dont think i have looked to see if the plates set at the same angle in the TB itself, so even though its closed maybe it can be shaved down a bit and made so sit perfectly up and down..i will look and let you know what i find...

Yeah Mine has done that since I got the car... no mods... it's an ECU thing that alows for you going back into gear while still moving so the engine and trans don't rev too fast to match the new rpm of the tires. I think it's something the ECU does/learns depending on drivign style...

I wouldn't worry about this until the idle doesn't drop to normal levels when you stop. Then start looking at sensors and checking for vacuum leaks. Which is a likely possibility if you think it's sitting too high and not wuite right... do a quick check of yrou vacuum hoses.

Tim, I get the same problem here! To fix it I can tune in the super afc quite a bit richer at lo throttle setting 1k, but then I don't get as quick throttle response. My TB is also bored out and polished.
